I do have a fuel processor installed and fuel pump cycles on. Don’t think that would cause the black smoke but I will check that for sure. I’m leery about trying to crank it, fearful that I will do more damage…

Getting back to the problem. If you have fitted cam chain extenders, you can forget the timing as the culprit. Is it a carbed, or a fuel injected bike ?

Harking back, to your first comment. I never heard of that happening. before. Black smoke usually means unburnt fuel in the pipes. I would resort to the old school of thinking, and stick a charger on it, and rev the fuck out of it, It either starts up, or it blows up FI bikes and their computers, i dont understand. And dont need to

I think if you disconnect an aftermarket fuel processor at the battery the bike should still run. This might tell you if the aftermarket fuel processor was the issue.

My 06 fuel processor went bad and it got really rich and started blowing black smoke. Removed it and it ran fine.

I will disconnect the fuel processor from battery and see if that makes a difference and then go from there. Thx to all for thoughts so far.

Removed fuel processor, not the problem. Loud banging from seems like front cylinder. Removed front left plug wire, noticed oil on the end and in spark plug tube as well as on fins of front jug. I’m sure there is other stuff to look at that even if I found something I would not be able to fix. So it looks like I have a choice to make, used lower mileage engine swap, rebuild original engine, new to me bike. No clue on cost of labor since no local dealer works on a bike this old. Been looking at the Vaquero since they came out but have never ridden one and no local one to be found.

I wonder if the cam chain has cut a hole in the spark plug tube ?
