My 1500 is like Micks (a Classic not a Nomad though) and mine takes 3.5 L or 3.7 quarts. Says so right by the filler cap.

Mike, this thread is a classic example of why it is good idea to have your own manual. Here is the oil specs for your bike taken from the owners manual.

I have a manual, and i read it.I drain my bike by removing the filter on the left hand casing, while its on the on the sidestand.I dont know how i could get any more oil out of it any other way. When i put 3.5lts back in,its full to the top mark on the oil window.I can only assume that the missing 0.4ltr stays in the engine when its drained using the sump plug on the bottom. All the more reason to use the side filter i reckon.

Which oil to use is an open subject, but I use Mobil 1 4T (10w40), and coolant should be changed every 2 years, and I use the Prestone long life premixed. Other things to consider is the fork oil, final drive oil, and swing arm service.
I just changed my oil yesterday, and it took 3 qts & 8 0zs, which is typical on mine. Also might want to check the oil pre-filter, this is where I drain the oil for every oil change, I've never used the crankcase drain plug.

Mikanic, I bought a used 08 Nomad last year. Mustang seat. Ride 2 up most of the time. Love it. Bought a pump for the shocks. What a difference. Money well spent. It is my first "big bike" also and we can now do the longer trips. Going to full synthetic seemed to make the shifts smoother. enjoy.

I use mobil1 4T 10w40 and my bike likes it very much.
One thing you'll likely want to do is the cam chain tensioner extentions if you hear the ticking or rattle from the engine. Lots of good info here on that. Change the final drive oil, flush the coolant and change the plugs and air filter for good measure :) Enjoy, I like my Nomad more each time I ride it

Congrats. Great bike to jump into the deep end.
Make sure you read up on those air shocks before you fill them up. Never use a compressor. Hopefully they're not already blown out. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk

Mike CONGRATs on your new to you bike! I would do all the fluids,Brake fluid and anti freeze! Swing arm maintenance , rear differential oil ! For oil I use MOBILE 1 10/40 MX4T . DO NOT use any oil that says energy conservation. You DO NOT want car oil as it has friction modifiers in it and the clutch can slip! Change for oil as well ! The service manual can be picked up here sometimes or E Bay . How old is the battery?

As for metric as a universal measurement system, here in Canada the government implemented the metric system in 1970, 36 years later we still use both imperial measurement as well as metric. Our buildings were based on 4'x8' materials try using metric and you have a 1.2192M x 2.4384M sheet of wood...doesn't work. Do you want to buy ground beef for $3.44/lb., or $7.58/kg, price is the same but for marketing it's more attractive to buy in pounds and ounces. A 12 oz. beer, 355ml really! And aren't speeds in the UK posted in MPH not KPH. And you guys are driving on the wrong side if the road!!!
