If it ends up it's not practical to try it in a day then I'll just go as far as New Hampshire.

Rt 201 to Canada from Waterville is a nice ride, especially when you get past Skowhegan.

Don't let the posts about Mt. Washington being questionable for riding deter you/anyone from doing it.

The pavement part (6.5 mi) is well maintained and the dirt part (1 mi) is packed down so stones are not an issue (it's smoother than my driveway). Takes about 30 min up. I will ride this Mt road any day over city streets. Yes there are steep sides drop offs, cars coming the other way (most of which are moving very slow), It's not a technical ride just a keep your eyes focused on where you want to go, not over the edge. There are plenty of pull off areas.. If you don't count the stagecoach in 1880 there have been two motor vehicle deaths, 1 in 1984 and one in 2009.

Maybe it's just my unique sense of humor but I get a kick out of going up there during Laconia bike week and watch the big bad bikers freeze up when they need to ride on hard pack (stop, turn bike around and go back down), or when they see bikes stopped on the hill at the top parking and then pull right up to the bike in front of them, instead of pulling into the lower lot.

So Enjoy the ride wherever it is. as long as you are comfortable with what you are doing. Don't ride unsafe Please.

Thanks for the info hillhouse. I wouldn't be overly concerned about riding up there.
I'm sure being patient and careful it's not a major problem.
In Arkansas gravel isn't uncommon. Although other than my drive way I try to avoid it.
But it's looking like I won't have time to make it that far north.
We'll see.

rt. I-89 S to exit 17 for rt. 4 E, rt. 104 E, rt. (Mac could meet us here) 3 S, rt. 11 E, rt. 11 A, rt. 111 E, rt. 1N, Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
This is 5 1/2 hours, 234 miles.

Coming back is just as easy as there are numerous routes to take. Of course you can always shoot the interstates and save time.

L. Geo. N.Y. rt.9S, rt.149E, rt.4E, rt.I-89S, rt.I-93S, rt.101E, rt.I-95N to the Old Orchard Beach, ME exit. 5 hours, 260 miles.

Actually the routes aren't that bad, the beauty of a trip across N.H. is that you can take an alternative route at almost every route you cross. It will be a great way to see the best states in the Union.

Dave, if you go near Meredith, N.H., Mac could lead you to the Maine border, which isn't that far away.
Meanwhile while travelling through N.Y., you could check out a site or two.

Gerry thanks to you and Mac. I usually take RTE 2 Norther Maine both ways when going to Laconia and the Rally NH. Just sure where I want to head south to catch RTE 4 looking at several options.
