sarc If I were you I would check out the bevel gear.. My 01 1500 was out 0.138 in slop and had no noises. It wouldn't track well though. I could feel the rear end move over.

Hey Mac,
What about a brass laminated, peelable shim washer? The laminations are .002" thick.

on edit:

They look like they could work, What 'we' need now is a guy who can access the spacers and get the spacer OD. My bike is still in the trailer box, and iced in. :'(

The washers ae just a tad steep huh? I have ordered before from this company, but never saw these shime washers before.

Ok I did take measurements. Spacer OD was 1.102 but i was going to use 1.105 to leave a bit of play. Now the OD of the seals is 1.643 so I was going to use 1.650. Hope this helps out.

Mac,
Their a little pricey, but would it cost to get a custom machined brass washer that filled the gap in your swing arm within .004"?

Is there a reason that the shim couldn't be same outer diameter as the seals, with an inner diameter of the shaft that passes through the swing arm? Or would the shim washer need an inner diameter that would clear the outer diameter of the spacer? I think the latter....

I was a little lost... Since I can't just go get the measurement right now, it's that snow and ice thing see...

Yeah this method looks good. The shims need support from the spacer ends, or they will fall till they land on the spacers. A fall of 0.003 is fine. But it won't be that much. That excess adds more to being divieded by 2, so the slop for the spacer will be much more like 0.0015, which is probably perfect. I didn't look at the page list yet to see if there really is a spacer set at '1.105 '. If there is BINGO.

Then see if you can buy one shim set and split it for the slack you need to take up. Get that measure ment with new seals installed, but no drive shaft.

You sill will need to moly grease the rear wheel and spline from time to time. Maybe not book spec of each 7,000 miles, but sometime just the same. That U joint should be checked at the first rear tire change.... The shaft should be lubbed then and the grease in the swingarms should be too.

More than 1/2 of these bikes don't have enough grease in many of these places, Both mine didn't. My center spacer was all powder rust!!!!!

None of this is hard to do, it is just time consuming. It takes me around 6 hours to go thru all this and clean up, not counting the hand done tire change. But I work slow because I am broken, plus I rag my sockets so I don't mash chrome plated parts. To me little details add up to a better quaility. I add anti seize to most of the fasteners too.

When I did that service I found corrosion in the (4) 14mm acorn nuts at the gear box flange. The threads were under attack by water getting in these threads.

On the 1600 the top shock towers had needle bearing to grease too. The lower mounts need rubber lube, and the acorns there need anti seize as well.

For those with a zerk in the swing arm you still need to pull the long bolt and grease it and push more grease in as the bolt goes in.
