Gas Fill Up!
I always have the bike on the side stand when filling up, but seldom ever get off the bike. Partially it's because my wife gets off to put the credit card in, etc.

Gas Fill Up!
Good point. I do remember back in the "old" days when there were FULL service gas stations, which were the norm in the 60"s and early seventies, the attendant would be at the pump handing you the hose before you could get off the bike. I think back then we saw that as great service so that we wouldn't have to get off the bike. I do agree, get off and be safe.

Gas Fill Up!
OK, I don't have a death wish or anything like that but I never get off the bike to fill the tank.
I turn the ignition off, put the bike on the side stand, remove my gloves, open the tank, do the credit card thing and fill the tank. Done it the same for 40 years. Don't see the problem.

Tim, The bike isn't grounded unless the side stand is down. If you are wearing rubber soled shoes, the bike still isn't grounded with you sitting on it unless you put the stand down. Hydrocarbons flowing through the nozzle create a static charge that can cause a spark at the nozzle tip resulting in an explosion in the tank (fuel/air mix) and fire. Much less chance of this happening if the stand is down. If there is a fire and you are straddling the seat, (spilling fuel on hot pipes) your chances of getting off alive are greatly reduced. It's safer to dismount even though a static spark may never happen. Just like the no cell phone while fueling up rule. As far as I know there is not one documented case of a fire being caused by someone fueling while talking on the cell phone. Most of the fueling fires are caused by starting the fueling and getting back in the vehicle because it's too cold to stay outside. Sliding on the seat builds a static charge and is discharged at the nozzle when you grab it.

Gas Fill Up!
Mitch, I always put the side stand down, maybe this is why I haven't gotten into trouble yet.

Gas Fill Up!
I don't see people siting on their nomad too often, but the vtxs and some harleys have the filler cap in the center of their tank. In order to fill the bike ALL the way up, you have to have the bike centered. I imagine this is the reason they do it.
