This is a little different than gutting the stock pipes but.... if you can weld and have some fab skills... My 1600 had/has V&H bagger pipes... they are 3 inch inside diameter. Bike came with no baffles .. PO had cut all baffle off except last 2 inches. I purchased a standard straight thru muffler with a 3 inch OD. (try TSC or other farm equipment stores for a variety of small diameter straight thru mufflers) I cut the muffler in half giving me to identically baffled (?) halfs . I welded up end plates on the cut ends, welded the uncut ends to the 2 inches of VH I had ( which contained the mounting holes for the VH baffles. I added a piece of pipe to extend the pipe up into the header pipe. I gained a ton of low end torgue back, it's got a healthy deep sound but not that raw open pipe sound. One fellow told me it was the best sounding metric he had ever heard. Admittedly this may not work on the stock pipe depending on diameter and owners skills and ambition but it worked for me.
To each his own but I like semi loud pipes because I believe Loud Pipes Save Lives

Hey TC - nice Drifter! I also have found there is a fine line between a good sounding exhaust and a plain annoying one on the Nomad! For the 800 Drifter a set of Roadhouse with the Quiet inserts worked like a charm! They are still abit loud but a low not obnoxious loud!

You know it came that way when I bought it.
You also know I have put 2 sets of baffles in each pipe to quiet it down.
I still think it is to loud, not obnoxious loud , just not as quiet as I like.
Cindy and the friends we ride with on the other hand think it sounds good.
Did you think it was to loud Jared

Thanks rewindgy, it is a fun bike to ride since I had the chain and sprockets replaced with a belt and pulleys.
I mostly ride it to bike nights but Cindy takes it on some of our shorter 150 mile day trips.

Haha, We should make up a bumper sticker. I'd put it on my truck.

If it were me and i did this twice, so it is what i would really do..... is buy that after market set and leave the stock set alone...

If the laws get any goophier than they are now it will be far wiser to have a set of stock pipes you can install in 15 minutes for your sticker... Then with another set of gaskets put back on the aftermarket set.

i don't care what anyone with a gutted stock exhaust says..

You gain nothing but a tone...

If you are seeking 10% More Miles per gallon, 10% more savings because of it, 10% more power, and if you can get real gas better than all 3, then you are looking at a TFI fuel modual, an after market exhaust and a form of big air kit BAK
Oh I forgot dedicated regular gas as 87 octane which also is cheaper again, and No Ping......

When i vist TC I put on my stock pipes

Maybe the Nice quiet Nomad will be my alter-ego. I'm running straight Samson drag pipes on my Vic. and it's actually kinda nice not to listen to that echo in my full face for the entire ride. Yikes, I may be getting old.

I had V&H Cruzers on the 800... spent many hours and many $$$ quieting them down by welding extra baffles inside them (well no... I took a leaf from your book actually TC and had someone else do the welding )

Got them just right in the end. Except on a (very) long trip.

Now?... I very much like the (nearly) stock, muffled deep and slightly de-baffled (didn't like the "fart in a bottle" tin-can sound of fully de-baffled)... Great on a long trip, don't interfere with the bluetooth conversation from my pillion - keep the neighbours happy...

Yep. Smarter and more mature.

I still quite like it when the "loud pipes save lives" guy rides past. It sounds very nice in a visceral sort of a way? I'm just relieved I don't have to straddle something that sounds like that for hours at a time.

The only other system I know well besides stock in V&H Baggers and mine are set up to have power but as little extra noise as possible. They are louder than stock, but they are not totally out of hand either. Around 70 MPH they become too loud to suit me but i can't ride in NH that fast legally.

90% of my riding is just puttin around at 45 MPH in 5th looking for sallymanders and toads
