Itinerary for Cortez - Update

Monument Valley is amazing! This is a place you've seen forever in movies and on TV. You come over the hill out of Mexican Hat and it is all laid out in front of you. The scale of it is unbelievable. It is well worth the time to ride out there.

Just to wet your whistles a little bit...this was taken in Monument Valley (2008)

Thursday – Meet and greet for farewells. Breakfast? There is a Denny’s next to the Budget Host.
Maybe we can find a place that serves FOOD?

Did you say "unpaved"??!!

Does that mean dust, dirt and rock cuts on tires??

Kris- I'll look at different possible routes for getting down to Cortez. I know there are some AMAZING back roads that would be nice to travel on. I'll let you know what I come up with.

Looks awesome. I've wanted to check Monument Valley off my bucket list for some time now.

Bill,

Out here unpaved can mean many different things. I drive 2 miles of gravel everytime I take the bike out. Just slow down and take it easy. Still have never seen rock cuts, dust yes.

Keep in mind some people never take their bikes on anything but concrete and asphalt, and gravel can be intimidating to some riders.

Yep, when it come to MC ridding I am a "pavement queen". Now, that is a term used in wildland fire fighting and has nothing to do with sexual orientation.

One other thing we need to pay attention to is the temperatures. Monument Valley will be 100 degrees this weekend. For the ones of us that went to Mesquite, we probably won't forget the unseasonable heat. Moab is going to be around 95 degrees. We will probably want to keep it in mind when planning the trips.

A reminder to the northern riders coming through the hotter areas before getting to Cortez. Drink plenty of water and keep hydrated.

Agree with that Mark and CJ. On the gravel roads, I will probably try and take that road to see what it really is. I have tried to google map it but can not see where and how much it is for gravel. If it doesn't look good, we stay on the main highway.

Agree on drinking plenty of water. Between us with tourpacks, we can probably bring enough small coolers to pack along so we can have water for breaks.

Gravel roads are no problem. Just put you nubby tires on. :)

Tuesday – San Juan Loop Ride – Meet up at 8:45 a.m. and KSU at 9:15 a.m. Return by 5 to 6 p.m.

Dinner Meet at one hour after returning. Tequila’s Mexican Restaurant. (just 3 blocks from the Budget Host)

The Four Corners Monument is closed for upgrades during the week and even on the weekends you can't see the monument.

On Mesa Verde, the road up to the park is under construction and have had comments that it is not nice.

Unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances indeed. I think these changes in planning have been handled well by the SW Region leadership. Good job, Joel and Jared!
