I wave at ALL riders, and usually first. I don't let others decide if I am going to be friendly or not, I decide that. Maybe the other rider is having a bad day and a random wave may make a little difference, maybe not. Oh Well. I also wave at marked units and horse trailers. My choice, not theirs.
Thanks for your time

I can't tell what bike oncoming riders are on, and I wave if they wave first.

Well, not everyone has met me yet. I just like to warn people I'm coming.

On the open road, I will wave most of the time. In town, no wave. I am seldom on Interstates but it is also a no wave zone for me.

Usually I can tell when a group of bikers are coming and I can see their left hand off the bar I flash them the low wave...

Well Brad, now we are all impressed: you can actually can see oncoming motorcycles. Perhaps you should add "most perceptive" to your signature line!

Years ago my understanding was that two fingers with arm out to the side meant all clear ahead (no police). And arm angled down with index finger (Note I said index finger) extended meant speed trap ahead. But I guess with radar detectors that has been lost.

If you are warning oncoming traffic about a cop ahead, you tap the top of your head (or helmet) with a flat palm.
If I am warning cagers, I either flash my hi/low beam or do the "slow down" gesture with my left hand (looks like patting an invisible dog on the head).

They must have disabled their "automated peasant wave feature"

Why would you be alerting people in cars of a speed trap. If you get caught doing that here, you will be ticketed.

Because car drivers alert ME of speed traps. What goes around comes around. I don't do it right in front of the cop.

The past couple of years they set up a radar trap, but what a lot of people are finding out is that a un-marked cruiser is going back and forth, picking up people for flashing a warning. I don't warn anyone, if you have a radar detector your good to go.

Besides, it would be hard to make a ticket stick when all he did was reach up and shift his helmet. Pushed on it a couple times. Not saying they wouldn't write it, but then they would have to prove you were actually warning people and not just shifting your helmet to a more comfortable position.

I guess the cops in Vermont must not have enough to do. Out here, there are too few cops spread too thin to operate like that.
