Well, it’s alive! Closed it all up and started her up. No strange sounds and running smoothly. Did not remove crossover tube or need a ball end hex wrench. Thanks to all for the support.

Timing requires the crank to be rotated clockwise according to service manual, exactly 412 degrees.
Does anyone know what can happen if you rotate the engine counterclockwise? |

I imagine the timing would be out, and it would run rough, if at all.
