Gear whine

Mac, if there IS something wrong, I would welcome tire noise as the culprit!

I put new swingarm seals in when I did the service about 3000 miles ago, as well as a new cotter pin, and head pipe gaskets. I cleaned the driveshaft boot and it is in great condition.

By the way, I did not even have to take my pipes off to remove all this stuff. I figured out a way to remove the rear end without taking the pipes loose at all! I will try to remember to shoot some pictures of the process as I put it back together.

Yeah you can leave the saddle bag frames in place, but I don't. They are in the way and come off easy. I am stuck after seeing the pics, but I hope someone who has suffered this problem steps up. I think there is another bearing in the bevel gear case.

My 06 has never done a number of things, that goes wrong............. yet.

Some days I skin cats to get at harder stuff and some days I don't. It all depends on the time I have.

Working with owners can go both ways too, and sometimes it takes longer under pressure than it does if I just work alone. Ain't that right Jim?

I've been hearing all kinds of noises on my Nomad since it was new. What really helped was using AMSOIL Full Synthetic 10W-40 oil. Now it runs much quieter and cooler. I would've never believed that oil can make such a difference, but it sure does! Now I use AMSOIL in all of my vehicles. Good stuff and worth every penny.

Gear whine

I got everything back together and finally took it for a short 10 minute ride. I left the bags off, and I could still hear the whine, but it is not that loud, and it almost sounds like it is coming from the back, now. I am starting to wonder if it is tire noise (which I would welcome, as far as noises go).

I think I might just try running a different oil in there and see if it makes any difference at all.

I assume you checked the rear gear box for level right?

If you can duplicate this on a lift, and I would try, use a long rod as a stethascope. It's a old cowbow trick, and they used railroad tracks. I use a 24 inch extention, sometimes a 36, but any length will work, even many extentions slipped to be on so long as they fit snug.

I also have a techs and a medical real stethascope, but usually grab the 24" extention first.

In use this on any water pump bearings, any alternators, any crank, cam shafts, rod bearings cam chains, any moving parts I can't see.

But how would a cowboy hold a railroad track against an engine?

I am pretty tireed tonight. So, bear with me if I am ignorant here, Mac. When you say "checked the rear gear box for level", are you talking about the final drive fluid level? That I did check. I drained and replaced it.
