Tim, It would seem he is not sure if the clutch is slipping or the motor is having a hard time keeping the revs up under load.
Trying to wind it right out in 4th will have one of 2 results, the rev limiter will cut in @ wide open throttle indicating that he has reached maximum designed rpm and probably does not have a power issue, or if something is hindering performance either fuel, or ignition problems he will never reach full rpm and feel the limiter break in.
This of course does not test if the clutch is slipping, but that should be self evident.

I have the Barnett clutch spring on both my 08 Nomad and my 98 Vulcan 1500a and they are a huge improvement. I also use Amsoil and have had no issues. I ride 2up more than half the time and have never lacked for power. I've passed trucks going nearly 100 2 up w a weeks worth of luggage and still had room on the throttle.

I put the Barnett clutch spring in just before the Custer rally and then towed 300+ pounds of trailer from Phoenix to Custer SD and back. We took I-70 from its western terminus @ I-15 in Utah all the way to Denver. over Vail Pass and through the Eisenhower Tunnel at over 10,000 feet. I had no problem pulling up any of those grades, and could still pass other vehicles with ease.

2006 Nomad 70,000 km's - 2 up pulling a tent trailer. Clutch is only now starting to slip slightly when cold (0 - 10C) and will not after if warms up. Will be putting in a MT25 this Christmas. Bike is not the most powerful in world - but you still should have no problem pullin hills just 2 up! I normally have to drop one gear for long hills with 2 up and trailer - if I want to go up them briskly - drop it down to 3rd and hang on! I have cleaned it up with pipes / Cobra TFI and Chuck's air intake but that only add's a small amount of HP.

Where??? We could also have them race up Trail Ridge and see who's bike/rider can handle the curves and elevation.
