Glad to see I am not alone. I now ride a bike that is 9 yrs old and it replaced one that was 23 years old (Honda Shadow). I don't need the next best thing but I do value comfort and reliability. Having said that, in all likelihood I will sell the 07 Nomad late summer and look for a 1700 Nomad with low mileage.

Bill even though my bike runs and looks like it's new, it is actually older than your bike is. (2005).
It will be in the year 2017 and buying my First New bike isn't what I would call the "need to have the next best thing."

I would call it... Buying the best new bike on the market.

Here's an analogy: It's 2016 and you want to buy a car. You can buy a 2003 Crown Vic or a 2016 A8L or 745IL and the price is close to the same. What would you buy? There's more to value than just cost, it's what's offered for the money, which is value.

All I am saying is for half the price I can buy a very good bike (used) and put 15K in the bank. Like I said, "value"/best" is in the eye (ass) of the rider.

I would do the same as you if I was only going to ride for just a year or two and needed a new ride. But I hope to ride for the next 8 to 10 more years.

It wouldn't make since for me at this time to spend 15k to ride a used bike for two years.
A brand new GTLE would cost me 8k to ride for for the same 2 years and is under warranty.

Now it would make since if I spend 15k and get to ride a new and safer bike for 4 years and is under warranty. Trade it in and ride for 4 more years for 15k on a newer bike and it will all be under warranty.

I have a good used bike now and will still keep it, but it is light years behind in safety and comfort features compared to the GTLE. It is so old that is has a cassette tape deck in the dash.

You are confining its all in the eye of the rider and what he/she wants or expects. The difference for me in what I can buy for 15K or less and a 30K bike is not good value for "me".

But here is something we can agree on. HC sucks big time

That doesn't mean its old, it just means it's a Star. I haven't checked lately, but they were making them with cassette players a couple of years ago. CDs have been around 30+ years and have been largely replaced by digital media, and they are still selling bikes with cassette decks. That's a company that's really in tune (pun intended)with the consumer. (I'm just busting chops here, Cliff)

That's good reasoning , Is that what you tell your wife to justify a new bike?

Yeah I know about the cassette players, I was just making a point. Funny thing is the tape player has an AUX plug??(2005). I can play music or the GPS through it.

I bought the bike because of who owned it. If it was a HD, or a Vic, that is what I would be riding now. It just so happens the guy had a Yamaha.

Make a list of the features side by side and lets go over it. The rider interface on the gold wing looks like the control panel from mission control 30 years ago. I'd need to have a savant pillion just to remember and tell me what all the buttons are for and we haven't even gotten to what it doesn't have. Just to get ABS we have to buy the model that costs 27-28K. May be CBS is enough, but in the 21st century, ABS is pretty standard on touring bikes and some manufacturers have it on all their street bikes.

At this point, HD makes a more compelling touring bike and that says a lot.
