Largest Thermal Solar Plant in the World. (380 MW)

I've been passing by this site off and on the almost three years. They're now up and running. A couple weeks ago I was on the bike just into California and took a few pics. The first one was five miles away. The second, 15 miles and the third a 5 miles with allot of filtering.

I wondered what would happen to a bird that flew through this field of 170,000+ mirrors. I found out this week. One of my vendors connected to this site confirmed that indeed a bird wandered into "the beam". No puff of smoke, it just immediately fell from the sky dead.

To get some scale, the three towers are 480' tall and the whole site covers five square miles. I've been told by others who have seen these pictures that this would be a great place for a SciFi movie. Pretty wild stuff.

The mirrors direct the sunlight on the steel tank at the top of the towers. None of the mirrors heat the same spot on the tank. The tank temp. can reach 1300 degrees. The tank is filled will an oil mix. The oil is circulated through a heat exchanger that heats water that is turned into steam that drives a turbine that drives an AC generator that delivers 12000 volts of electricity that is fed into a step up transformer in this case the electricity is stepped up to 175000 volts and is fed into electric lines that you see on large towers. [I know this is the longest run on sentence in the world but I don't have time to punctuate at the moment.]

THANKS for the info.. That is pretty cool. I never would have know what it was or did, That is a great idea on how they make steam :) We make steam with oil or gas flames here!
