I’ve had the fuel pump DFI relay fail twice.
It’s the round relay on the right side. I finally replaced it with a after market relay.

Would you mind posting the aftermarket relay information that you are using? $43 is a bit pricey for the Kawasaki relay and it doesn't seem to be anything special. I'm starting to suspect my issues are possibly DFI relay related and I would like to have something in reserve. |

Update:
I finally got around to running some additional testing today.
Obviously a problem that the 2 pins for the coils are not getting enough power to them. I am assuming this means time for a new ECU? I am going to try and ensure all the connections at ECU plug are clean and such to be sure, but I am not putting much faith in that being the culprit. Anything else I should check with that? For years my bike had a hick up on take off. It would act like it was going to die and then go. At idle it would miss occasionally.
One day I decided I was going to track it down. I pulled the ECM and checked the plugs. I unwrapped the wiring harness so I could wiggle each wire separately and I could kill the engine by moving certain wires. I determined it was that wire at the plug. I priced the plug and harness. It was 950.00 for harness. I went on salvage sites and found complete harness for 50.00. Now I had all the plugs. I cut the big plug wiring harness one wire at a time and soldered and shrink wrapped each wire. Rewrapped the harness and put everything back together. Success, no more miss. Runs smother than it has for years. Don’t really know if it was wiring or plug but it’s fixed. I put up with that crap for years. It’s like a new bike. Being able to pull off at idle without giving it gas and not shutoff is great. I had to get real pissed off to finally dig in and fix it.

Don't find yourself chasing your problem down a rabbit hole.
You are going to spend way too much money just throwing parts at it. If the coils were bad it would never run EVER. You have been checking voltages when everything is fine and working. Drive it around close to home and when it fails, at that point check with a voltmeter. |

After finally testing things, the ECU appears to be the culprit.
Following the testing instructions in the service manual, all points to the ECU motor functioning properly. How risky is it to get a used ECU? I cant find much info on these being a regular issue item. Add in a short test ride again, my driving lights were having a little disco party of their own. As soon as shut the engine off, they worked steady as could be again. Hoping that was also an ECU issue as well or I will be tracking that down soon as well. |

UPDATE: RESOLVED
After seeing something about resetting the ECU, I figured I'd give it a shot. Pulled the battery, pulled the ECU, waited a couple hours and put it all back together.....runs like a champ |

ECUs very very seldom go bad. I've seen 2 HDs and 1 Kawa ECUs since the year 2000....
one was in a wreck, one had been welded on and the other had been dropped off the back of a pickup truck.....
