Not sure about that Jim. I know that if it isn't done, the chain will wear a hole in the spark plug tubes. I've not come across anyone who has had cam chain slack problems after installing the extenders.

That front tensioner is a bear to get to with the crossover tube in place. I've heard it's easier if the tube is loose, so disconnect it at both ends. Oh, and bring lots of patience.

Mitch,
I'm not sure you would have to check both tensioners. Mine were the same; front and rear. I suspect that the stretch would be similar on both chains.
