you certainly want the bypass valve to kick in at some times. better dirty oil than oil starvation.

Absolutely.

But I never let the filters get dirty. I change them 4 times a year which is about every 2500 miles. If my bypass kicks in, it's because of high oil pressure on a cold-start situation: the oil can't even get through a clean filter fast enough. (At least that's my theory.)

On a nomad, oil starvation is almost immediately noticed because of the hydraulic lifters: you hear valve clatter if they don't pump up. That will happen even though you've still got reasonable pressure to the bottom end.

Still, it would be nice to know what the relative relief pressures are between the stock filter & the Supertech.

do you know how much dirt would have to be in your filter for the bypass to kick in?? Seriously? Those bypasses are more for filter malfunction that dirt overload.

They work on the differential between the pressure on the input side and the output side.

The example of cold starts, stopped up filter for any reason, etc can cause it.

The issue comes in when you have a filter that will screw on but has a different PSI rating on the bypass. You can have a filter that never filters, it by passes all the time because it isnt used to the normal oil pressure on the bike/car.

I cut up one of the Supertech filters & that bypass spring was pretty stiff. I doubt this filter would ever bypass on the Nomad in normal service.

But you never know...

There was a run of Vulcans that actually were blowing filters apart on a cold start because of a faulty oil pump bypass valve. The warranty fix there was a thicker filter can and adaptor with its own bypass as I recall. I don't know anybody personally that had to have that mod though.

I recall vw diesels doing that. Cold starts would first puff up the can and the next start would blow it to bits.
