I bought a NUVI 255W for $128 Cdn. Seems to work good, if it craps out I'm not gonna get too excited - I've spent more for less!

I don´t say that Garmin is a bad GPS, on the contrary, but
i really don´t think Tomtom is of less quality.. ???

Took Strobe's advice and went to GpsCity.com and ordered a new Garmin Nuvi 500 and RAM mount for $300 (shipping included). They were originally $399 but were on sale for $259. RAM mount was $33. Good enough for me. It has a rechargeable battery that supposed to lasts 8 hours. That's probably what I'll use so I won't have to hardwire it in. Probably only use it for a couple hours at a time, anyway. Thanks. Jamie

I use a garmin 200 that my wife keeps in a pouch located behind my backrest. It works good if she yells loud enough. TURN LEFT - TURN LEFT NOW! and I do. I'd like to have the 550 someday.

If my wife liked riding more I could've gone for the cheaper version Garmin, yelling as we rode. But my wife only rides limited miles on the bike so that system wouldn't work. :) :) :). Don't feel bad though, because I use the bike as alone time in many cases. I have to admit there are times I wish she was behind me, such as long trips, oh well.............. You have to take the good with the bad.

I have the old Garmin 2620, have been using it on the bike and car for 4 years with no problems so just a few weeks ago I bought a 2720 on E-bay new for a $112.00about the only difference is the 2720 has text to speech and I can't hear it on the bike any way. Now when I am on a long trip I can have the 2620 on the bike and my following me in the car can use the 2720 she can't ride long distance any more but she still wants me to ride ans she wants to be with me. WHAT A GAL

I too have a 2720.....and believe its a great value for a waterproof unit. Got mine off e-bay vendor for 100.00 prepaid. 2720 has more features than the 760 nuvi I use in the car.......and did I mention waterproof!

The type of GPS one gets is about like the oil they get for their crankcase. It's all up to what you want to accomplish...and their are many opinions.

I started out using a Garmin 2610. It's a nice unit, but it decided it didn't like the washboard roads of New Mexico between Tucumcari and Taos. Plus, it wasn't as waterproof as I wanted. But, it wasn't made to hang on a motorcycle either.

So, now I run a Zumo 550 and am very happy with it. I have all my routes loaded (including the routes I'll use to get to and from Custer, SD), I have a 2gb SD card loaded full of MP3's. I have hooked my Zumo into my J&M CB by auxiliary and can hear all the commands from the Zumo, plus the music. The Zumo also gives me the option to use Bluetooth and XM radio. I haven't taken advantage of those yet. I know some guys that have purchased the XM unit to go with it and get weather reports on their Zumo.

The Zumo is a fairly versatile unit and is made for a motorcycle, so it can take the abuse. It's easy to use even with gloves on and is waterproof.

Trip, is loading routes onto the Zumo done with a program that comes with the unit?
Also the 550 dosen't have lane assist. Do you think that is a big deal?

TC,
Lane assist has never been a big deal to me, but I'm sure others would like to have it.

As far as routing on the Zumo.......the unit comes with the software (MapSource) that you load on your PC. In the software, one can make custom routes and then save them on your PC and download to your Zumo unit with a supplied USB cable. Then, when you're out on the road, you just call up a route and it tells you where to go.

Thanks Trip, appreciate the info. I am going to get the Zumo 550 or the new Zumo coming out in a month or so. I think it is the 660 but not sure. I think it is the same features as the Zumo 550 but has lane assist. Wow, with all the "I thinks" in this post maybe I better do a little more research
