My car tire impressions- for real

I have 16000+ miles on my Dunlop SP5000. It works great for what I want.

Is there a difference between a MC tire and a CT, Yes. Just like when you get on someone elses bike, or a new bike, you can feel a difference. I think you'd be very unobservant to say that there wasn't, but the pros definitely out way the cons.

If you want to analyze the crap out of the tire, go for it. It will be interesting to read what you find out.

My car tire impressions- for real

Good posts Dan.

I always appreciate the analytical view. Like the rest I think you should get your 500 miles or so on the tire before final testing.

I admitted I was a bit unsettled at first. The back end would try to come out from under me when making turns. I took them very slow and deliberate for quite awhile. Eventually I got braver and as I lowered the pressure and got over 200 miles turns were solid again.

The last hurdle is to see if I can make a solid 1-2 shift while turning. The stock Stones would start to slide sideways and I'm hoping a wider tire will cure that ill.

I'm at 29 PSI right now and the digital caliper says I'm wearing evenly across the tread and the tire feels good. I will check wear in another 500 miles to see if it is still even. But for now I like 29#.

Looking forward to the next report.

My car tire impressions- for real

I wonder if, aside from feeling the bike cross the edge of the tire, when some one draggs the foot boards is there still enough rubber, tread, friction, pressure, ect. to keep the needed traction to make a curve? The tread on my p/u tires kind of goes over the edge a little. Does the lean cause the CT to reach a point where there is only slick rubber touching the pavement? If not by the time you reach slick rubber or the point of contact gets too small to hold the intended path would you already be heading for the ditch in a flashy shower of sparks?
Thanks for your time

Looks like some are enjoying the discussion, and some aren't. I'd suggest that the cult members who are not enjoying it, stop reading it :)

All of yesterdays testing was at 30psi, I'll still have to download the pics from that, perhaps tomorrow.

Very impressed with the pics but more so of your slow speed riding abilities Dan. Ever thought of doing trials or is this a result of trials riding?..Bdog

I personally find this is giving me a massive headache and having to read too much too late in the night. However, I like what Dan's doing and think Cajunrider is also doing an admirable job of actually working with Dan to further his experiment. As one who has stood on the fence about this for some time, it's refreshing to hear an opposing viewpoint, or at least one asking some serious questions.

So, let Dan have his say and let's enjoy this experiment, at least we'll get a full picture of his experiences. Anyone have an issue with that can go complain to BD. I'm sure you'll love his responses. He's not king of the smartasses for nothing!

Have you looked at my footer picture you spiked headed maroon? I've been running a car tire longer than most!

Jeez.... coming from a guy that's pretty much destroyed his Nomads motor already!!!

I don't think Dan has an opposing view. As a matter of fact I believe he's methodically coming around to the same conclusion the rest of us and Blowndodge have. The RIGHT conclusion! I believe BD will back me on this. :)

Great photographs Dan. They prove what I always thought.

I want a pic of SWB on that fence.

I agree that at first there is a different sensation when riding the curves with a CT. However, after a 100 miles or so, the sensation was less noticeable. Once I mounted an Avon Venom rear tire in the front, the bike leans much easier. Riding on gravel and sand is much more enjoyable with a CT. I would have bogged down in sugar sand with a MT but the Nomad chugged right though it with the CT.

The conclusion he comes to may be right for you but not right for others. I personaly will never have a car tire on my motorcycle. That is the right decision for me. But I do find Dan's thread informative.

When the ct "rolls up on the side" it still has a wider contact patch than a motorcycle tire. I have followed Mitch while he was putting on a sparks show, with Darlene on back! I hear he has a set of tailpipe extentions for sale, cheap, they have no chrome on the bottom.
When the tire companys can/will build a mc tire that will get 15,000 + mi I'll consider one again. I shouldn't have to replace tires more than once a year. CT are not for everyone, but they work for me.
