The Amp is what you need to wake those suckers up.

How do you go about getting a set of these? I was in contact with the person that was making them but got busy with my relocation and didn't follow through. Really interested in getting a set.

For the input into the amp did you use the RCA jacks or the leads to the speakers?

You have to cut off the RCA inputs on the amp and tap those wires into the speaker outputs of the head unit. I basically took the stock speaker wires, attached spade connectors to the amp wires and connected them up. Then run new speaker wire from the amp speaker outputs to the new speakers. No cutting, no splicing. I can go back to stock in under 30 minutes if I had to. It is a very simple setup without hacking into the factory wires.

Kind of taking a survey. I am on the fence. Do you guys think the grills would look better painted satin black?

I've been debating with myself about doing this. Good thing my kickers came with a spare set of grills.

JLAudios
Here is a set of pictures depicting the stock color JL's (silver) and then after I painted the grills satin black. Painting these grills require in the very least patience. In order to remove the grills, great care must be provided in unscrewing four small screws that are actually what hold the grills to the woofer basket. However once the screws are removed, the grills do not freely come off because the tweeter wires (two per speaker, one red one black) are respectively connected to each terminal, then run through the basket and into the actual grills. The tweeters are mounted in the center of the grill. I cut (thereby voiding the warranty) the tweeter wires as close to the connecting terminal while leaving enough space to re solder them. These are Marine grade speakers. Whereas non marine grade do offer far more options and styles as well as prices, the marine designation on at least this brand is evident. Not only in the look and feel of the build quality, but the sound as well. These have a six hole bolt pattern. I drilled the added holes into my 'Rapters' (the 6.5 adapters) in order to achieve not only maximum grip but also to occupy the six holes on the grills. Which in my opinion would look half done if I left open mounting holes. The speakers came with stainless steel mounting screws, but after installing a set, realized the provided screws did not bite deep enough into the Rapters. I ended up using #8x1-1/2 stainless steel crews (item #127054 @ your local Lowe's)...lol Hope this sheds more options and confusion...lol to those out there looking to do this.

They look good in satin black. Now I know which way I have to go. What kind of paint did you use?

How do the Polks or Infinities sound without an AMP? I will receive the spacers in a day or so and am looking at speaker choices. I figure that it will be a while before I would be able too install an AMP if it is necessary. If they sound good without, I may not bother. I will probably go with the Polk 651 unless I go with some of those with LEDs in them. lol

I have Polks in my fairing with an aftermarket Pioneer head with decent output. I still am toying with an amp but space is an issue. They sound pretty good but I would like to have a little more clarity.

I have the Infinity 612m's and they are night and day over the factory 5.25's even without an amp. I would imagine any quality-brand 6.5 would be.
I had the cowl off two winters ago to get it hydrodipped and that's when I found a deal on the amp on Craigslist from a guy in Las Vegas. In case you guys don't know about it yet I have been using SearchTempest for years (even before it was called that). If you like Craigslist but want to search more than just your local area use SearchTempest. Anyway, I mounted the amp while I had the cowl off but could not bring myself to buy any of the aftermarket 5.25's as I decided right then that I was going to figure out a way to fit 6.5's in there! I never hooked up the amplifier. I will be removing the cowl again for several reason and one will be to hook up the RF amp. Just saying if you don't want to buy or hook up an amp (even if for just right now), you'd still be happy going with just the 6.5" speakers. In the interest of transparency, however, you should know that I make the speaker adapters. I would make the same statement about how much better they sound, though, even if I didn't. Just thought you should know that so if you feel it bears any weight in my statement. |

Thanx for makin these adapters, they are helpin us to experience more enjoyment when ridin, I look forward to upgrading.
My skoot and I really need the improvement as I have a short shield (shorter than most) which allows lots of wind noise and I wear ear plugs, specially if I'm out on the hi-way or higher speed roads. RACNRAY
