Dobeck TFI settings

I have Vance and Hines (ultimate baffles) and Chucksters single plate air kit. I am wonder what other with similar mods have their TFI set at. What type of MGPs are you getting with your settings?

Thanks!

Dobeck TFI settings

Hi Jared,
I have debaffled stock mufflers and a 9" K&N filter kit. I have my TFI set at 4-4-1-9 and I have not checked the actual mileage but it is much better since I tweaked the TFI recently. Still no gasping between between 1st and no pinging. I recently got 250 kms before the low level light flickered on and 260 kms before the light came on solid. When stock the light usually came on at around 240 kms, it pinged like crazy and sometimes cut out between 1st and 2nd.
Not any more.

Dobeck TFI settings

Settings by the numbers of another bike don't mean a whole lot. The other bike has a different throttle body, different intake manifo9ld different pistons, valves and you name it. Then no 2 alike TFI units are the same. Different parts always varry.

A little difference here or that makes a difference.

So the best way to set up a TFI is set pot 4 to read RPM with pot 4, which turns the unit on basicly so it can read. That setting isn't written in stone either, but start at 9 O Clock.

Then With all other pots OFF begin with pot 1, and dial up best RPM. This pot is idle and low RPM Cross over.

You may have to fine tune Pot 1 if the rpm goes sky high. If it does and it usually dies when I set up pot one on a bike that was just stock, but was just modded with a spector right side only and a set of V&H Baggers.

When it seems the RPM is just going into orbit then you lower the rpm with the stock black air knob, to something resonable like 950 RPM +/- 50 rpm Refine again for best RPM, and leave it a dot mark richer than best RPM.

Between the numbers are 2 dots.

Pot 2 is for hard twisting of the wick. Again nothing is written in stone.

You can dial this up on a dyno and not get busted, or you can take several rides after making sure you won't tick off folks and draw un-wanted cop attentions.

Here you are using the street as a test track. In that case set pot 2 at 3 O Clock right off, and make a few real hard runs in 2nd or 3rd gears only, and going around 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile only. Wide Open Throttle (WOT)

Set pot 2 at 4 O Clock and repeat, better / worse? If better set pot 2 at 5 O clock same testing Better or worse. Increase numbers untill it is too rich and gets worse. Then back it off seeking best.

That way could take many hours and even several days.

Once you have a "Known" best write it down.

Then you can reduce wasted fuel for most other riding by lowering Pot 2's numbers, and setting for that best on days you can't resist horsing around.

Pot 3 won't be used and should be off, unless there is a popping on decell problem, you wish to drown.

Then once this is all knowns you can reduce pot 4 so it won't see lower mid range RPMs if you wish to conserve a little more fuel. That number is around 4 O Clock.

If you go to low on pot 4 you will turn off the TFI Unit as if it wasn't there almost.

It's been a while but I think when pot 4 is turned too far off you get a solid red led light from it, on pot 4 only.

Here is a chart I made back before I gave up and got IVANized...

Well sorry about that, the first image shrunk to useless... Hope these are readable. I can email you the XLS or PDF if you wish.

Hope it helps, ride safe,

The TFI has 4 pots. I don't think the pots even have adjustment numbers on them. Anyway, the tables you listed apply to the Dobeck EJK, not the TFI.

Go to the Dobeck TFI pages and look up the tuning info. There are instructions there for how to tune it. Not many people have TFI units anymore. It's old technology. More have EJK units (I do). Most now have Ivan's flash.

I tried the Dobeck fuel module with nothing but problems and still had constant decel popping no matter what the settings were. The only way to eliminate all those head aches is to send off your ecu to Ivan and get the flash.
