Arizona to open road to Grand Canyon's North Rim

JACOB LAKE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Department of Transportation says it will reopen the state road that runs from Jacob Lake to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon on Tuesday.
State Route 67 is regularly closed in the winter season due to heavy snowfall. Transportation officials say it's being reopened as the summer tourist season begins to crank up.
The road is the lone link to the North Rim, which lies at the southern end of the Kaibab Plateau. The plateau is about 8,500 feet in elevation and offers spectacular views of the canyon.
Transportation officials say it's about a 21-mile hike between the North and South Rims or a 215-mile drive.

I'm not physically able to make a 21 mile hike, but I can ride 215 miles. What are you suggesting?

I just noticed on azcentral.com that the road to the North Rim will be open in a day or two and thought it was worth mentioning. I was kind of surprised because I thought it would already be open for the season.

I thought the same. Figured the snow would be gone by now. However, this is the time of year that high altitute roads are repaired. Snow probablly has been gone awhile, they just had some repairs to get done and they go quicker without those pesky tourists mucking things up.

You guys are going to love the ride to the Grand Canyon once we get up on the Kaibab Plateau. Towering pines and green meadows - it's going to be great! Just outside the entrance to the North Rim is a herd of bison.

If you've never been to the Grand Canyon before it is going to be a real treat.

The last time (1976) I was on the NR I hiked from the SR. It will be nice to ride into the Park this time!!

Never been there but have always wanted to so it should be a treat. We will see what our exchange student thinks of a long motorcycle trip. Her dad and uncle are drooling at this that she gets to do this. I have talked with them a couple of times that they should come over and I will lead them for a week +.
