Help! Can't remove the oil cap.

I was attempting to change my oil last night, but found that my oil cap is REALLY tight and I can't even get it to budge. I've got the 1500 with the cap with the wide slot. Any suggestions how to remove it? I'm running synthetic and getting ready to go on a trip, but I'm at about 4K miles and need to change it ASAP. Anyone know of a vendor that makes a different oil cap with a tap that you can just hold with your fingers?

Help! Can't remove the oil cap.

Get yourself a fender washer and use it with a pair of vice grips to unscrew the oil cap. Be sure to hold it down with force in the slot to keep it from jumping out and scratching the cap or whatever else it may hit. It should come out fairly easy this way.

Help! Can't remove the oil cap.

Here's one that has something to grab hold of instead of the slot.

Help! Can't remove the oil cap.

I use a big washer and a pair of pliers to get mine out. I used that method when I had my 02 Nomad and carry on the tradition with the 08. When you get it undone make sure you check the o-ring on the plug. If it's got any sign of crimping, cuts, knicks, etc. replace it. You will be surprised how easy oil gets around that thing if it's messed up just the slightest.

This what I have on mine.

It was so tight I had the dealer remove it so I could do my first oil change and they had a hell of a time. Ended up buggering up the slot any way so I got this one off Ebay.

I haven't seen a silver dollar in at least 10 years, Al.

Help! I've fallen and I can't get up!

I GOT SOME SILVER DOLLARS Use a 1/2 inch fender washer and slip a rag in the slot with it. Grab the washer with big honkin pliers. When you are ready to install it agin anti seize the threads, turn it in remove it and anti seize the threads again. Put the washer on a chain and keep it in the tool box.

Help! Can't remove the oil cap.

I had a similar issue while I was going to Custer last summer. I managed to get a motor mount shim from a mechanic at a shop along the way. That and then a pair of pliers and it came off fine.
I switched the OEM cap for one with a "twist off" end similar to the one on the eBay link.

Help! Can't remove the oil cap.

I use a round spark plug gap tool attached to a pair of vise grips to remove the oil cap. The wide side of the spark plug gap tool fits pretty snug.
