Question about 1500 Nomad

Looking at a used one with 32000 miles on it. Looks to be in good shape. How many miles do they generally run. I guess is this too many miles to look at or not to worry about it.
thanks, David

what year is it? is it fuel injected?

some nomads have been known to reach over 200k miles. all of my bikes have over 50k on the clock. 32k is just broke in in my opinion.

It's a 04 and I see it has air filters on both sides. I thought all the 04 was FI

04 is injected, and 32,000 is nothing. Just broke in if it was treated right and got oil changes and assorted greasing services. It hasn't got air filters on both sides if it is stock, but it might look that way and you should check. If you can see paper elements if has a cadman 2 filter mod, which is possible, but probably it is in the stock configuration and the right side where the throttle body is, is just a sealed air filter like cover, and the real filter is on the left. Around here we speak as if seated for left and right.

I just thought that before you buy the cam chain extenders should be checked, by someone who knows what these are and how they work. If the bike got them before and that wouldn't be very long ago, the bike is set for life. If it didn't it's time to know and get them done. if I recall the parts cost about 30 bucks and the time is a couple hours. If you need the parts and are handy pm Chuckster here, as he makes them and may sell them on E Bay for all I know. I don't do E-Bay, too many assassins there for me. or what ever they are called when they bid in the last 2 seconds.

Have been reading on the cam chain tensioners. I'm a chief mechanic so doing the work is no problem for me. Of course if I get it I will picking ya'll minds. It is at a dealership and might have them check it before I get it. Once they open it up I want to look for myself.

If it is a US dealership they probably have no idea that you can put extenders in, Kawasaki USA has no such parts, but Chuckster does. A Canadian dealer should know but probably doesn't either. Kawasaki Canada has the parts and they can be ordered from a Canadian dealer.

Might be best to check it myself. Hoping to make the deal by Saturday.

thanks, David

The above link is good, but the oem thick washer shouldn't be cut off with a whizz wheel or anything else. The press fit is light and if you chuck the washer you are taking off in a vise easy and drive the device out of it with a brass drift, it even takes less time.

I am a x foreign car tech and have to say these are the most slack chains on the cogs i have ever seen. Normal chains can't be pinched between the thumb and finger and still be raised off the cogs with the tensioners retracted, but on these you sure can. of course the engine has to be removed from the frame to do it. I had the experience on a local guys bike where when doing the extenders which he needed the valve springs turned the ft cam back a tooth skipping the chain. he found out when he started the engine and it sit and popped out the intake. The way he worded the problem it was pretty easy to tell cly 1 was out of time. Most all of these bikes will need these extenders at 28 to 32 k. Most guys that are not techs end up asking about an oil leak up high, and so what has happened is one chain or the other has hacked sawed one of the spark plug well inserts. And Vi O La we have oil !
