seem like pretty small wheels for on highway use to me.

The wheels are fine. The trailer I built and towed to Custer were the same size and i went 3600 miles with no problems. They aren't ideal, but they will work.

I pulled the trailer on a 3600 mile trip last year out east and this year we went 7000 miles with it out west. No issues except I had to replace the tires cause I wore them out. Standard 8 inch trailer tires. I bought the replacements at wally world, rim and all and swapped them out in the parking lot.
