Something not mentioned, is you need a set of ball end allen wrenches. This makes getting the bolts out of the tensionres a whole lot easier.

Don't neglect ordering or picking up two new paper gaskets and o-rings. My original gaskets were in excellent condition so I didn't change them. 2,000 miles later the #1 cylinder gasket started leaking on my way home from Antlers, OK. Had a thin oil film covering the entire left side of the engine, including between every fin, and the left saddlebag. The worst was the oil that covered my wife's left chap shin. Anyway, it's not a bad job if you follow the directions closely and have the ball end allen wrenches like Joe said.

Mikey, If your intake crossover is still in place, put a little grease on the 90 degree end of the allen wrench to hold the inside bolt for stabbing on the #1 cylinder assembly. I couldn't get my fingers in there no matter how I turned or twisted them.

I got my extensions put in this morning, but I don't know how you guys had enough room to do anything on the front tensioner with the crossover piece in the way like it is. I ended up with the Dremel going mad cutting it into 4 pieces to get it out.

Sure made the front one easier to replace than the rear one. But, now I've got to order Chucksters dual plate and a Cobra FI2000. (shhhhh, dont tell anyone but I just needed a reason to do it any way ;)

By stabbing do you mean so it will hold it on the end of the wrench. Was it hard to get it loose? I have not even looked at the rfont one yet When Chuck called he said the ball end wrenches make it easier.I have never even seen one of them but I am going tomorrow and get a set. Thanks for the info

Mike,
I think what Mitch is referring to, is putting some grease on the wrench and then that will hold the bolt secure so it doesn't fall off. This is done when you are at the reassembly stage of the project.

I have both styles instock, and I have one K-N filter kit for the open style here instock or the single filter for the dual plate kit.

You are correct Joe. Sometimes I'm not very clear when I explain something but you read my mind. Mikey, Joe may have already told you but you need to loosen the screws holding the crossover tube on the right side. This will allow you to move the left side end enough to get to the inside bolt.

I agree if yu have the black cross over tube, it must be loose as a goose, meaning un-bolted every where, so it will wiggle as much as possible.

Even then things are very tight. The bit in a cheap multibit tool with a screw driver handle to accept all the bit work alone with a wrench, not the handle in the kit.

No matter how you go about getting the bolts out, it will be work. When I do these I get the bolts free of the engine threads so the bolts flop in the extender body holes, and have a rag under the extender to catch any bolts that fall out before I am ready.

I simply leave the bolts in the holes.

Then the fight is getting out cly 1 extender body.

This is another reason my left side is naked.

If the air tube goes away, thhe best place to cut it is on the left side apx 5/8th" back of the flange. One cut, one real clean cut, which could be plastic welded back one day.

Even then it takes a gentle hammering to drive that blasted tube out. I use a dowel and a hammer to drive these out, and if anyone is around i get them to pull from the right and wiggle as hammering happens.

Then there is a fancy little kit of allens tools you can get, that are real short. These have a ratchet you flip over for tight or loose, not a real ractchet, but a one way sprauge. Costly little set too, but well worth it for working on Nomads.

When I changed mine at 40,000 miles this is what I did.
Took tensioners and $$$ to dealer.
Next day, picked up bike.
Went riding.

Yeah, I know, this was not a helpful post but I wanted to up my post count. ;)
