Stebel Horn

Ordering my Stebel Horn tomorrow morning. Wondering what I need to make the install look nice. Are there chrome brackets out there to attach it to the bike? Do I just splice it into the existing wiring? I have never done any serious mechanic work until I bought my Nomad and now I am trying to become a little handier with the wrenches. Sometimes I learn the hard way which costs me in the amount chrome and add-ons I can put in as quick as I want to put it on.

No chrome brackets, unless you make one and have it chromed. I used my stock horn bracket, turned over and swapped end-for-end.

Wiring a Stebel requires a relay in order to do it right. It draws a lot more current than the stock horn and can damage your existing horn wiring. You can use the exiting horn wires to trigger the relay, but you'll want to run a separate, fused wire to your (+) terminal on the battery to power the horn. If you aren't familiar with what I'm talking about, it sounds more complex than it really is.

The relay and pretty good wiring instructions should come with it. As for mounting it, you're on your own. I mounted mine sort of like what CJ describes, it should be kept nearly vertical.

I had a friend wire in my air horn. He spliced into the existing horn wire so both could be used. He put the 4 post relay on it. When he turned on the key, the horn blasted us outta the garage! He says he needs to use a 5 post relay to prevent that. Any thoughts?

My only thought is why would he want you to use both horns? From what I have heard on this site the stebel is plenty loud.

Amy, you don't' need both, believe me. Just wire it with the 4 post and things will be good.

I used a piece of strapping with two 45 angles in it for mounting and put it on the side of my radiator.

Same as everyone else said. Run the original wires to the relay and new wires to the battery.

Here are links to the actual instructions that come with the Stebel Horn. I have a 1500 and I believe you have a 1600. 1600 is much easier to find a mounting spot because you do not have the key switch under the left side of the gas tank to deal with.

1600 also has a better OEM bracket that can be used (see CJ's comments) for the Stebel.

It was pretty easy install once I had a game plan.

Good Luck!

I have a 1500. The fella that helped me get wiring done on other projects wired the ground in differently from the instructions I read to him several times. Anywho, when he wired it the way I read it, it worked. Yeah.

On my 1600 I have both the original and the Stebel. The original is operated by the original switch. The Stebel is operated by a push button micro switch I installed in the left hand switch housing. This way I can still use the original horn when I don't want to blast someone, like when passing a bicycle.

Here's where I mounted the horn:

Here's the switch I installed:
(The toggle switch controls my headlight modulator)

Got my Stebel in today, directions are pretty straight forward, but I have one question. Where are you guys mounting the relay?
