Speed-o rattle.. anyone??

Anyone else had to deal with this?
It appears that the rubber ring around the speed-o has crushed down or shrank enough that the speed-o has room to rattle.

I either need to replace the rubber ring, or I'm half tempted just to run a bead of black silicone under the rubber ring. Either way I have to get that rattling stopped.

The rattle is likely coming from the (2) bushings that hold the speedometer to the cowling. Three washers on each side will stop the rattle; I had and used 8mm washers. I have done this as a temporary fix until my new bushings come in. Take off the speedo cowling and wiggle the speedo while watching from the bottom; you'll see the problem. Put the silicone away. ;)

I actually considered doing the washer thing, thanks for confirming it for me.

From where did you order your bushings? and could you not order the new rubber ring around the speedo from there too?

I ordered both parts from Cheapcycle Parts.com last weekend. Check their microfiche for the part numbers and price. The bushings are in the meter section on the fiche.

If you have a 1500 you have a sort of problem. If you have a 1600 it is a cake walk... I expect you have a 1500.

I took three o-rings on each side and I think I have the rattle licked.

I haven't road tested it yet, but on he bench it's solid as a rock.

More than one way to skin a cat. Report back on the result.

Bringing this back t the top. Did you get it fixed?

I have noticed this rattle. It is RPM dependent and if I put pressure on the speedo it goes away.

The rattle sounds like loosely adjusted valves when you hit the selected RPM range. No rattle at lower RPM's, no rattle at higher RPM's. Happens in all gears at maybe 2000-2500 RPM (no tach, yet).

I'm hitting the road on my GS for 4 days. I will deal with this rattle when I return and post my results.

I do have a 1500. I took off the speedo housing and on the bench I removed the bracket holding the speedo to the housing. There are two bolts coming of the back of the speedo with wider shoulders around them. I found two flat washers that fit over the shoulders of the speedo bolts and put it all back together. The added washers put more pressure on the rubber bushings which are around the speedo bolts and create a tight bond against the speedo hold down bracket.

I did not do anything with the rubber gasket between the front of the speedo and the chrome housing.

Easier to do than to write about. If the above is unclear, let me know and I will open it up and take some photos.

No need to take it apart. I have just had mine apart twice and everything felt tight on the bench. I flipped the rubber washers over because they seemed thicker on the back side, I tried getting the speedo apart thinking it was a glass rattle issue. I have double checked everything and still rattle. I am going to try the extra washers like you said. I have no problem wrenching, I just get frustrated doing the same procedure 15 times with no answers.
Thank you.

The speedometer needs the gasket around the lens and the grommets to be in good shape to dampen the rattle. The parts are cheap and easy to install. Damper grommet=$1.73 ( 2 req'd)and Damper $11.67.

I just took it apart (again) and put 5/16 washers under the nuts and washers. Seems to have solved it for now.
I'll order the rubber for the next time.
