Over Charging..........
Some of you may remember my issue with Junction 2. Here http://www.vulcanbagger.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41197
Well since then my bike seems to be charging at 14.4-14.7. It does this at idle as well as 70. Batt has 12.2 when I hit the switch. I have checked it with a meter as well and it shows the same thing as my gage shows. I know the issue I had before did kill the batt dead and I am wondering if it is a battery issue? OR rec? Or stator. I plan on tearing into it the weekend. Just asking for heads up on anything I need to look at besides the connecters etc. Prolly gonna cut out the plastic and solder the connections this time around. I think that will be better??

I don't think you have a problem. Is the battery getting hot?

Before condemning the the charging system, I would yank the battery and have it properly load tested. If it has issues, the charging system may read a continually high output to compensate. I would not think it is a stator problem, it is my understanding that they put out a constant output and the rectifiers dump the excess as needed.

Yeah load test was my first option. Its the easiest and quickest. I was thinking that the system noted a low batt and was trying to charge it. I dunno if that's the case but again batt is not original and prolly needs a load test. I have a battery store near me ill run it up there as opposed to auto zone.,

Sounds to me like it is a charging system problem. Electrosport has an excellent troubleshooting guide here:
http://www.electrosport.com/technica...-finding-guide The charging system will not produce more voltage if the battery is bad. However, the charging system putting out too much voltage will kill a battery, so the first battery dying, may have been caused by the over voltage. Another possibility is that the first battery developed an internal short and the bike was running as if the battery had been removed and the positive and negative cables directly connected once it was cranked. Running a bike this way is a sure way to fry a motorcycle charging system. Good luck! Hope you get it solved soon. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

if you just turn the key on and the battery shows about 13 volts that's fine. with the bike running if it shows a little over 14 volts that's fine too. my Victory shows the same numbers

My 01 and my 06 do/ did that. With passing lamps on I get high 13's. Not so sure you have a problem.

The charging voltage according the shop manual for the 1600 is between 14.2 and 15.2 volts@3000rpm so it is within the correct range. The question being I guess is there enough load on the system from either a poor battery or extra driving lights etc to keep up that output all the time. It is my understanding that the rectifiers do not vary the output but dump the excess.

UPDATE>>>> So went to batt plus to load test the batt. He said it was green but low. I could see it was an old batt so I went ahead and bought a new one so as to eliminate that out of the equation.
Started her up and at idle I get 13.1-13.4. At rev I get 13.7-13.9. When I first got the bike it would go up to low 14;s. Not sure if I have a problem or not. Least I got a new batt lol Any thoughts ??

Yeah I do. But I did not turn them off as I didn't think about it lol. They were on and HL was on bright. Ill have to do that tomorrow when I get home.
And yeah brand new batt. Have not charged it on a charger, but the guy over at batt plus said it did not need charging via a charger.... it would charge itself. Going on his word.

Cold wires pass current better than hot wires do.
A battery fully charged will read lower on a volt meter. Passing lamps will usually show a volt less (2) 55 watts lamps) I don't think there is a problem either, but if there is it might be connector 2 that is shown in many recent threads, and is a ground block just ahead of the battery, all taped up. A test there is to see if the tape feels wicked hot. This connector should never feel hotter than anything near by it, and if it is hotter than things near by it there is a bad connection there.
