Ride to Baddeck

Hi all,
We had said from the start the idea of this rally was laid back and getting to Baddeck was part of the ride and half the fun. With that in mind We thought it was high time we started a thread were we could post our routes, departure dates, etc so that we may discuss to meet up along the way and ride together.
There are two main routes that folks will be traveling, Dave and Mary along with Cindy and Tim will be leaving the New Hampshire area and coming through the US and some of us will be travelling through Canada.
I will focus on the Canada route and Tim will fill in info on the US route as they get things figured out there. Basically from my home north of Montreal in the Laurentiens, I have a few choices to make my way to hwy 20, and most of them involve bypassing Montreal but after that I imagine anyone coming through Canada will follow a similar route. That is hwy 20 to hwy 85 toward Edmunston, then hwy 2, 104 and 105 into Baddeck. It is roughly 1,400km from the Montreal area and Cheryl and I will leave early Saturday morning the 14th and arrive on the Monday spending 2 nights on the road, yet to be determined where.

Just wanted to let folks know that Sue and I will not be able to attend this year's rally at Cape Breton. I had left shoulder replacement surgery about 4 weeks ago and at best, I may be able to ride again in the fall.

That being said, Dave / Mary and Tim / Cindy are planning to leave for Cape Breton from our place, tentatively on Saturday morning. Anyone joining them from the south or west is welcome to meet up with them here (New Hampshire seacoast area).

Tim and Dave will be working the route as well as the timing and Tim will be providing the details going forward as things get worked out.

Going to miss you and Sue not being at the rally Tom, although given Sue’s navigational skills and this being another rally near water it is a wise choice!
Seriously, hope you are making good progress on the recovery.

We are definitely going to miss being there and especially seeing everyone again, but good point on the water!!! Kind of like "Charlie on the MTA" with a paddle boat on the Bras D'Or. We might never be seen again. (Google it if you don't understand the reference.)

Shouder is coming along nicely, but it is a very long process. Not like a knee or hip with a very clear ball and socket. More like a ball against a plate, all held in place by muscle. They have to separate the biceps muscle from the shoulder blade and cut into the rotator cuff in order to get at the joint, and then reconnect it all. Takes 12 weeks for all that to heal to the point where most of the pain will be gone. Then I can start strengthening it. Until then, it is strictly working on range of motion. But at the end it should be pretty much good as new. Amazing what they can do.

Geez Tom, that description of the operation gives me the shivers just imagining it. Hope it heals well and you get your fastball working like new, or is it the piano you play I forget.

My route to New Hampshire is as follows.


Leave Camden on Fri. July 13th. Take I-90 in Utica NY to I-87.


Take I-87 for 6 miles to route Route 7.

Take route 7 approximately 22 miles to route 9.


Take route 9 to Keen NH and get on highway 101.


Take 101 to Epping and then Calef HWY to Toms house.


Dave and I have not firmed up the route from there to Baddeck. We will leave Tom and Sue's on Saturday and assume it will be a 3 day ride to Baddeck arriving later on Monday the 16th.

Tim it will be interesting what route you take in Canada. Not looking at a map, but I have to think our paths will cross at some point before we cross onto Cape Breton Island, maybe some where on the hwy 2.

Good to hear you seem to be making progress Tom. You know thinking back on the paddle boat incident we completely overlooked too of the best contenders for the coveted award.

Tom, I feel your pain, or I will sometime in the future. I know I will have to have total shoulder replacement at some point. Is that what you had? For now, cortisone shots are keeping me going.

It is still up in the air but my tentative route takes us into Canada at Houlton then riding route 2 all the way to Amhearst then picking up 104.
That is a long ways on route 2.

Thanks. Yep. They cut the top of the humerus off and press fit a half-titanium ball on a stud into the top of the bone. Then glue a plastic plate onto the shoulder blade that the ball sits on. They call it a total shoulder replacement. I tried a cortisone shot, but it only lasted about a week. Bottom line, I couldn't use the arm for much the way it was, so this was the only real option. But it should be pretty much like new once it is all healed. About the only thing the doctor said I would never be able to do is rock climbing. Oh Darn!!!!!

Tom that sounds like one helluva a surgery. I hope your recovery goes well and your pain free soon.

Tom, Guess you’ll be setting off metal detectors at the airport sports games etc.
Tim, yeah 2 is a long highway. Meet you on the 107th curve. Seriously we shall be coming down 2 so from roughly where you cross and get on the 2 we will be travelling the same route.

Be advised, if your fellas route includes the Englistown ferry at the mouth of St Anns Bay in CB it's out of service till end of August.
Not a deal breaker by any means but would involve a minor route change..........Mike

Thanks Mike. I was on that ferry in 2009, I said it then and maybe it is really worth saying again. It is so short a ferry ride, if one had a dirt bike and they left the ramp up one could jump the distance ala evil knievel! It does say here ( may 29th ) that it will be open some time in June ( 15th? ) we will keep a look out.

I had a trip planed that included that ferry.
Changed it to take route 19 and bypass the ferry.
