Emergency braking in corners

Have you ever really checked to see what it is like to need to full on brake in the middle of a tight corner, at speed?

I must confess I never did until this past summer. I had always practiced it going straight.

Last summer when I was going through a canyon with tight corners that I was taking at a fast pace. When I knew I didn't have a car behind me I decided in mid corner to see what its like to really need to stop.

I pulled the bike back up straight and hit the binders. I was surprised how fast I could stop, but I needed too also, as I would have run out of road as I wasn't turning when I pulled it back to straight up.

It was certainly an unnatural feeling to stop turning mid corner and head straight for the weeds. You might want to try it so that it won't be so surprising when you really need it.

We can never be too prepared. It's one thing to be anticipating and going through out mind what we would do, but it's another thing to really know that if we had to, we could pull it off. I agree that where possible and safe, it's a good idea to test our skills and sharpen them. When we're taking curves it seems we're vulnerable and that's why we shouldn't be riding faster than our line of sight will allow. Because we're leaning in a curve, I wonder if the "2 second" distance rule is enough?

That was one thing that I had to practice when I took the MSF course a few weeks ago. I have been riding for a long time and it is still unnerving to straighten up mid curve.
I recommend everyone practice those things you hope you never have to do,just to be ready in case you need to.
