Dobeck TFI installation
I will be installing (trying to install) the unit myself.
Question is, do I need to remove the gas tank completely off? If so, is that a major job for someone who never did it before. If I do remove it is there anything else that I should check while its off? Thanks, Henryk Login or Register to Remove Ads |

if you are installing the plug and play version you can do it without completely removing the tank. If you are doing the tap-in style then I would highly recommend removing the tank. Which is also very easy.
I installed the plug and play and I just lifted the rear of the tank and stuck a chunk of 2x4 under it to hold it up far enough for my hand to fit. |

Thanks OP.
I do have the Plug n Play version. On lifting the tank, is it just the two screws near the seat that have to be unscrewed? |

Coolant hose clamps - common source of leaks Coolant level (radiator cap is accessible) You'll just want to make sure the tank is near-empty. The less fuel in it, the easier it is to handle. Remove the chrome cover around speedometer (3 bolts) Disconnect 2 connectors under cover previously removed at front of tank Remove 3 bolts (2 rear, 1 front) securing tank to frame Disconnect 3 rubber hoses from underside of tank (1 front right. 2 at rear) Disconnect fuel line by depressing clip and sliding it off. It will not leak more than a drop or two. Carefully raise tank and place it in a safe place on a soft surface. It will be a lot lighter than you think. Once you've done it, it's a 5-minute job the next time.

Thanks for the break down in removing the tank. From your instructions it does sound pretty easy. I will be attempting this tonight, hopefully I'll have the bike ready for the weekend. :) Thanks for the quick replies guys. Henryk Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Henry, I've attached the link to the thread detailing how I installed mine. I didn't remove the tank completely but if I had to do it over again I probably would. As CJ said, with the tank off you can check hose clamp tightness, change coolant, etc. Good luck with your project. It's fairly straightforward and you will be happy after.

cactusjack makes a great point. There are alot of preventive things you can do. Once you get it off you will have no problem doing again for other mods.

Dont be intimidated, take the tank off. After the first time its a breeze. Put the TFI in the compartment under the left cover. There is a hole in the back of the compartment already that you can pass the injector connectors through (05 and up). Black lead from TFI goes on the negative if I remember correctly. There is only one lead from the TFI to the battery. Start with factory settings and tweak from there.

I have installed 3 NOT plg n play and the gas tank needs not to be touched ... All the wiring was done at the ecu, and under the seat. being something of a neat -nik I ended up with a shorter harness to the TFI modual than I would have liked. I should have left some of the wire as supplied and coiled it. I left around 4 inches of slack, but find I wish I had 14". That wy I could pull the unit off the velcro mount, and place it on my knee.
.................................................. . 1600 tank removal. remove the 8 mm (wrench size) bolt from the pillion seat. remove the 8mm same from the drivers seat remove the seats. Remove the speedo nacell with 5mm allen tool Disconnect the double lock connectors at the head of the tank. I think you can leave the igniton switch mounted, but not plugged in. Note the dual connector locks are a ROYAL Pain, hardest thing to do. I always forget if you lift or press them. Can't recall now either Un bolt the speedo head with a 10mm wrench, and place it on a soft cloth is a very very safe location upright. Un bolt the forward tank bolt 12mm wrench I think Un bolt the 2 rear tank hold down bolts. By hand press the 2 tabs on the fuel line IN, and pull off the fuel line from the tank. No rags, or pans needed, there is a shut off valve, at the worst you might get 1 drop of gas. Raise the rear of the tank to access a bit better if you have a left side dog bowl (air cleaner) Block the tank with wooden blocks a little. Se the hose from right rear, and pull if off or see where it goes... Over fill over flow. ( I just leave it, and feed it back, but I did pull it once to add oil between it and the fitting, so it won't always be stuck.) Right front tank hose needs to be pulled off the tank and a drop of oil goes on the fitting. ( Mine was stuck so bad I cut it close to the tank fitting, and after the tank was off cut off the stuck 1/4" from the tank.) Sing Aye Aye and up goes the Sailor, all 6 verses and haul away, setting the tank on a nice soft big furry rag way out of the way. .................................................. .................................. Look at the wire harness going DOWN behind the rear clyinder. make sure it isn't chaffing on the frame. (out of sight unless you lift it and LOOK. There is a nylock there, and it is a single release! DO NOT CUT That NYLOCK!) I did because I never saw one before, so I discovered after cutting it I didn't need to. Oh well.. Re-snug every water hose clamp you can find. And check the rad drain while yer at it since many leave the factory finger tight OR LESS. 'Ave yee some fun .................................................. ....... hose notes: Cali Bikes have 2 rear right tank hoses. One is red labled the other blue, the tank is marked, so just don't mix them up ok?

I agree with others about removing the tank. Follow the instructions on Gadget's site and you won't have any problems. It take about 15 minutes the first time you do it, but after that it'll take you less than 10 easy.

Ditto on removing the tank. While you are doing it, it is a good idea to lay in some wire cabling for future electrical connections in the future. I did 2 to the left neck cover and two to the right neck cover. Just tuck them in under the seat at the other end. You may be glad you did later on.

Plus 5....or how many positives on removing the tank. I raised the rear of tank to install TFI. Can be done, but much easier to remove the tank. Its intimidating the first time, but very easy after that. I've even done it 3/4 full of gas but recommend less than 1/4 full.
I've had mine off so many times looking for a way to reattach with Velcro to make it even easier.
