Just my kinda luck

First off I do not remember tighting it to tight ::)

But I can't get my oil filter off.

I have the thing that slips on the end like a socket but it slipped, would not move it.

Then tried the rubber strap and it didn't move it just bent it in.

Got any ideas?

Going now to get my jack back from a friend.

Ouch.. I am not sure what the rubber strap is, but I have a nylon strap wrench, in 1'2" drive.

It rolls up on itelf and will crush a too tight filter wicked bad, but it has always taken the filter off.

There is another method of driving a big screw driver thru a filter which is a last resort and real messy.

If that doesn't work you are really in a bad way, and will have to tear the filter off in bits, with out harming the sealing surface, or the threads.

When all else fails I use the screw driver through the filter. It always works.

A 12" pipe wrench worked for me once when the dealership put it too tight. I let them change the oil and give the bike a going over at 600 miles. The jaws on a 12" pipe wrench will open just enough to grab the end and they aren't too big to get it in place.

I have an 18" pair of Channelocks I guarantee would get that filter off.

I wish I was there with you, since that ain't gonna happen, place your strap as close to the base of your filter as you can and pull steady with out snatching. I had to change one after a friend of mine took it to a Jiffy Lube. It was so tight I had to screw driver it. And it was a lesson to him why he needed to do his own maintenance. ::) damit! :(" title="" border="0"/>

That worked once I got bike high enough to get a grip.

Thanks

12 inch pipe wrench was my preferred tool. It worked well, w/o jacking it up too. I learned not to over tighten it now. Works even better.

I had the same problems both times.

I use a wrench that has bike chain on it and it just pivots tight. Last time, I literally crushed the filter.

+1 on the channel locks. I still had some slip, but solved it by wrapping a strip of sandpaper around the filter. the grit bit and the filter came off without much hassle.

I have a strap wrench and a filter socket, both of which have never failed to fail, and I end up using channel locks or a screw driver ;)
Strap wrench works as long as it's not overtightened or glued to the vehicle due to years of sitting.

Let's see. . .the oil filter has a right hand thread right? Or is it maybe a left hand thread? Geeze, now I'm confused.

Righty - tighty, lefty - loosey?

Shucks, a quarter stick of dynamite will solve most problems!

Just so you know "I will never ever never use the screwdriver trick again". I didn't mention that I did try this. All it did was tear a big hole in both side of the filter and pour oil all over the floor, then on top of that you CAN'T go anywhere on the bike untill it's fixed. To me it was a duh-uh moment. I learned something.
