Web page question
Let's say (hypothetically) that a person wanted to set up a web page not for commercial purposes, just to share some information. Are their sites you can go to that will host a web page for free, or would this (still hypothetical) person need to sign up with a website hosting service and register a domain name, pay fees, etc.?
I have no background in this, but I'm sure somebody here has.

Web page question
Basically 2 options, you can use a web page space provided by your Internet provider for example www.comcast.net/mywebpage or www.attdls.net/mywebpage (Your ISP will advise you of what they actually are).
or You can go all out and actually buy a domain IE kawanow.org" (Obviously this ones taken) or cactusjack.us or whatever. You can purchase the domain name and web page and have it hosted for +/- $50.00 - $75.00 a year. There are hundreds of hosting sites a couple of the biggies are godaddy.com, 1and1.com, etc. You can google web page hosting and look for the best deal. If you go with your ISP web pages it won't cost anything additional typically as most ISP's offer a 5-10gb as part of their package. If you go with a hosted site you can also get your own email domain IE jack@cactusjack.com or mrnomad@cactusjack.us. The only hitch with getting your own domain name is picking one thats not is use as domain names are literally first come first owned however when you go to any of the domain purchasing / hosting sites they make is super simple to find an available domain name. Most of the web hosting sites provide easy to use web page building software or you can get crazy and learn a little html (That's what I know, the industry has migrated to more advanced languages like php and css). Hope it helps.

Web page question
Hey, thanks! I've worked in IT for close to 20 years and I support corporate e-commerce applications, but know basically nothing about personal web pages. Ironic, huh?

Web page question
Actually, I use *cough* MySpace to keep in touch with my kids and relatives, and share info, photos, etc.
It was fast, free, and the kids all already knew how to use it. If you want it to be private, you can do that too. |

Not really, if Iv'e learned anything from playing with puters for 25 years it's that no one person can do it all.
LOL I remeber a problem I had with exchange one time placed a MS support call, I actually had to go thru 5 different "divisions" to get the problem finally resolved. If you want to take it to the next step and need any assistance drop me a line. Good point Cadd, myspace is an option also, I don't like it cause of all the forced ads. Really depends on exactly what you want to do to point you which direction would be best.

Web page question
Proboards is free. I have a Proboards site myself, for another purpose. A forum isn't the same as a webpage though. Here we have a pretty much fixed template which can't be altered except for colors and fonts and a few things like that. I know there are other free pages you can get, but they all have the pop-up adds or banners or both, which is how the operators pay the bills.
For casual & non-commerical purposes they are probably fine. For more formal purposes, you really need to cough up some cash for a real web host. |
