Deer whistle, Fact or Fiction?

One of my biggest fears (other than riding thru Atlanta), is having a deer leap out in front of me when I am out in the boonies, especially at nite, as we have plenty of deer around these parts!

Anyway. somebody told me I could put a "deer whistle" on my fender and I wouldnt hafta worry about deer.
Here is how the theory goes.....
The whistle puts out a high piercing sound that only animals/deer can hear.
So the thinking goes, if a deer is alongside the road, and hears this noise, it will stop dead in its tracks, to listen to noise, rather than jump out in front of you.

Anyone actually have one of these on thier bike?
What you say, VBA forum?

I have had both manual and electronic ones. My dogs and other animals paid no attention to them. Google it and you will find studies that say they do not work as advertised. Others put out by the manufacturers say they do work. The study i relied on was done by wildlife ppl. Did not put them on my next bike. Peace of mind is where you need to go, but keep your eyes scanning the road.

Fiction, as far as I'm concerned.

I don't have a science-based reply, but friend of mine had two on his car when he hit a deer.

A deer is going to hear a bike long before it gets near him anyway, so what reasoning behind the theory says that the high pitched noise will cause a deer to freeze while a normal noise will cause it to bolt? IMO the whistles probably don't work. We have lots of deer hanging around my cottage and what I notice is if you make a noise they look up in the direction of the noise and freeze and bolt when they see movement.

I work in a body shop and regularly have cars come in after hitting deer-and have deer whistles on them. I also know plenty of folks who have never hit deer, and have never installed deer whistles...

I have a pic of my ex wife taped to the side of my bike. It scares the deer away (they can see in the dark like Batman).

My cousin would flash his high beams on his car. They always seemed to bolt as soon as he did. Anyone have an opinion on this?

Read the article. It explains why you should NOT do anything with your headlights. I got brakes. I just stomp on them and hope to stop in time. If not, I guess the insurance will kick in.
