Cobra True Duals - Baffle options

Just upgraded my stock clutch spring on my 2005 1600 Nomad to a MS spring (slip is all gone). The factory exhaust on the bike was practically falling off, so, I knew i was going to have to do something about it before I could reassemble from the clutch repair. I ordered Cobra True Dual kit with the billet tips. Like them a lot. Not to loud for me, but certainly louder. The old prude across from me will certainly be complaining before long. So, I am wondering if anyone has replaced the baffles in these mufflers yet (for the purpose of making them mellower), and what was used and what the results were, comparably. I haven't pulled the baffles out of these mufflers yet, and if anyone knows what fits or what the measurements are so I don't have to tear them down just to see, that would be quite handy.

I don't have the Cobras but on my V&H pipes I pulled the baffles and wraped them with this stuff called techmat.

That would be a cheap fix. Was there no wrap from the factory? Wonder if the cobra is the same inside - if it has any wrap or not.

There probably is some sort of wrap. But if it's like mine is pretty cheesy stuff. This stuff is way more dense.

What did it do to the sound? Deeper? Mellow?

I have the older style Cobra true Duals and the baffles have no wrap on them. Typically wrapping them with fiberglass muffler matt will mellow them out considerably...if they're removable.

Took away that tinney sound I was getting. I guess you could say mellower. But still when you crack the throttle they bark.

I can see that my cobra mufflers have some sort of packing in them. It's visible through the holes in the baffles. I would prefer to keep the baffles the way they are and just change the packing, if that will mellow them, because the pulls so much better now. Although, I'm sure replacing the clutch spring helped acceleration considerably as well. I don't think I was getting the full benefit of my fuel processor and intake before. I would like to just get that tinny edge off of the exhaust tone. Mostly for the sake of others. It doesn't bother me. The cruise pitch is very mellow, but it gets pretty tinny pulling any amount of slope and really loud under hard acceleration. I don't push it like that often though.

Maybe you should get a few thousand miles on them before doing anything. Its not unusual for the pitch of a new exhaust system to deepen and mellow out after they get some carbon build up deposited inside them.

Well, with this rain were getting, I won't be doing much riding anyway. Probably wait until we get some spring type weather before I change anything. By then I should have a few miles on the new exhaust and can decide if I want to change it up. Just wanted to get some tips or info before I did anything. Like to make informed decisions when I can. Always appreciate the fact that people on this forum take time to give advice.

Saw that on Gadgets site. What pipes do you have and what was the result? If you don't mind my asking.

I've got Cobra's on mine and they don't sound tinny at all. Not sure how long they've been on there, bike has 31k miles, but they aren't new and I enjoy the tinless deep bark on the throttle. I second the advice of getting more miles on them first

I wonder if they have the factory packing in them.
