Clutch Spring

What year did Kawi change the clutch spring on the 1600s? I have a buddy who owns and 2005 and is planning on replacing his spring. If my 2006 also has the problematic spring I thought I would go ahead and change mine at the same time.

Thanks in advance!

Try pinging Judge over at vroc, hell know for sure. I don't believe the problem was the spring, didn't they add a type of thrust washer?

But go ahead and put the Judges thrust washers in.

I thought it was 2006 that they changed the spring in the Nomad.

Not too sure? I know that they did change it, but I'm just not sure what year the change was made.

My Barnett spring finally came in last week. Have it saved for when problems begin.

I can tell you that without the protection of Judges washers; the teeth on my clutch spring were worn half way through the spring thickness @19,000 miles.

I think the clutch spring problem was with the 1500cc bikes. Don't know for sure.

I think they started putting the tougher meanie spring in the '05 and up. Which means the 1600 is when they started beefing it up some.

If you want a real spring get the Barnett. You will loose the built in slip, and have to use the clutch properly down shifting. I don't have this myself yet, but I will in time.

I have used enough Barnett clutch parts in cars and other bikes to know what it is.

Don't forget the side cover gasket.

If you ride up onto a 2x8 and let the bike lean over more, you won't loose any oil either. Just make sure the the bike is still stable. Maybe tie it off to any rafters just in case.

I don't know of any spring improvements from '07 to '08. I'm approaching 22,000 miles and haven't had any slipping problems yet on my '07. I purchased the spring to have it on hand if/when slipping problems arise. The Barnett MT-25 spring was $23 including shipping charges and it took a little over 1 month to get it. The online retailer I purchased it from didn't have it in stock and had to order it from Barnett. My local dealer will cut my cover gasket when the time comes. I may order one and hang it up in the garage until it's needed.

I have a Meanstreak spring, judge's washers, and a side cover gasket on hand in my garage should the need ever arise. If you'll recall, when I replaced my clutch spring, it was just before Custer and I ordered both a meanie spring and a Barnett. I put the Barnett in the bike, but am hanging onto the other stuff, just in case.

My clutch was starting to slip at about 22,000 miles. I ordered the Meanie spring and couldn't get in touch with Judge (he can be hard to find) and then somebody told me about the Barnett clutch spring. I ordered one of those and had it before I had the Meanie spring and the Judge's washers. Since I was in Custer Rally preparation mode, and was going to be pulling a trailer over 3,500 miles - I opted to use the Barnett spring. I'm happy with it. It's heavier than both the stock spring and the Meanie spring. I kept the other parts I ordered and may install them if the Barnett spring ever goes out.
