GOLDEN GATE, Ill. — A Mount Vernon, Ill., man has died from injuries sustained last Thursday when the Harley-Davidson motorcycle he was riding crashed into a deer.

Gregory Alan Johnson, 46, was on his way to work as an electrician at Champion Laboratories in Albion, Ill., when he approached the Golden Gate crossroads on Ill. Rt. 15 and hit an 8-point buck deer.

The crash killed the deer and threw Johnson from his bike. He was airlifted from the scene to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville for treatment of severe head injuries. He died Sunday night. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.

A celebration of life for Gregory Johnson has been set for 5 p.m. Thursday at the Richview Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, Ill. Family members have asked that memorial contributions be made to the Deaconess Hospital Trauma Unit.

Not saying the helmet would have saved him. But, it sure couldn't have hurt to have been wearing one.

It is always a sad thing to read about a rider getting killed.

Hope he gets better, but without a helmet I would guess he'd be dead.

Wear your helmet and boots folks. I got two deer strikes under my belt and by the grace of God (for some reason) landed right. By landing right I mean sliding across asphalt uncontrollably screaming like a little school girl.

It's deer season 12 months of the year around here. A couple of mornings ago I had two deer run across the street about 20 feet in front of me as I was riding my bicycle. A couple of weeks ago one evening I had 9 deer in my back yard. A 7 point buck, 4 does and 4 fawns. A regular harem! Can't shoot the suckers in my sub-division either. :(

I had a cougar run in front of me a few weeks ago on the way home from work. I couldn't beleive what I was seeing. Ive since learned that the Natural Resources Dept, released a bunch of them across the province to reduce our deer population. That also explains why my once great deer hunting spot isn't so great anymore.
