not good

my son in law called last night, to said when he started his '11 voyager, the engine started knocking, slight reve up , still knocking, shut it down. someone told him the oil pump is bad. he told me the oil light went out after start up. the bike has a little over 11,000 miles. A friend talked him in to switching to Amsoil some months ago. I think the switch is to early, and I have not heard of oil pump problems on 1700s. any thoughts?????

How long has it been since the engine ran last time? 11,000 miles is certainly not too soon to run synthetic. The noise will have to be properly diagnosed, starting by using a mechanic's stethoscope, you must find the source of the noise.

It could still be under warranty too. That said, switching to amsoil would not cause that. Not having enough oil in it could.

If there is sufficient oil and the light does go out after start up then there should be oil pressure. Perhaps it is a lifter.

I doubt the Amsoil is the cause of the problem, if the bike has warranty left he should take it in to the dealer.

A hydraulic lifter has bled down maybe ? This usually only happens when the bike has been sat for a few weeks/months. How long has the bike been sat and not started ?

My 2010 makes a lot of racket after sitting a few weeks. Those lifters make a lot of noise. Let it warm up at idle and check the oil level.

Not hearing it we are guessing. My guess is sometimes bikes, especially Kaw's, make a crapload of knocking noises on start up...from time to time. I agree with Highwayman, let it warm up at idle a bit and it will go away. If it is toast he isn't going to hurt it much more than it already is and I don't think it is toast.

Thanks for the input, don't know the bike has sat. The bike was used when bought. I will be in Fl. this weekend and get a better idea what is going on, than I will get back to you all. thanks again. By the way, My 2011 Vaquero turned 38,000 miles this A.M. I've been using Mobil 1 10w40 the last 16,000 mi. Lifter noise on start up has go away. Mileage has gone 41 to 43 miles per gallon. Lov'n IT!!!!!!!!!

It could be something a simple as bad fuel. Can't see Amsoil being an issue. Once the break in period is complete any synthetic is good.
