You can try spraying some graphite lock lube on the key and insert it. Does the key go in all the way? Did it work before?

It is always a good idea to introduce yourself when joining a forum.

Sorry everyone. ..
My name is Andy and I am new to the site. I purchased a 2004 kawasaki vulcan nomad 1500 recently and was told that if I ever had any questions, this was the place to ask them. I am in central Ohio and have had a number of bikes but this is my first Kawasaki. I will upload a picture as soon as I figure it all out.
Thanks everyone!

Andy, welcome. Ok so it seems by your reply that the bike is new to you, that being said my previous questions are some what answered. If you have no idea if the key you are using ever worked, it is possible that the ignition was changed and the keys don't match, on the other hand if it works in the saddle bags it is probably safe to assume that it is the right key, does it go in all the way?, is it stiff to go in?, or does it slip in nicely but won't turn?
If it is stiff to get in then lubing it might help, if it goes in nice try jiggling the handle bars a bit as you try to turn the key. Seems to me mine does no engage when the forks are right over on hard lock but just somewhere off of that.

Thank you CNC. Yes it is new to me and the key seems to just slide right in. I just put some liquid wrench in it and will let it sit for a while. On my bike, the ignition key fits just the ignition and fuel cap. I have a different key for my bags. I am beginning to believe that it may have been changed. Thanks again for the help!

Yes it is a long narrow style key. It is very sloppy. The ignition key fits this lock just as the ignition switch.

if the key won't turn lube the lock and get air to blow it out maybe. You may have to joggle the bars around to line up the hole.

My ignition key also fit's the bag's and petrol cap, the steering lock has a separate key.

I locked mine once and it would not unlock for me. I had to ride in circles for a week after that one!

You should do a week going the other way round, otherwise your tyre's are going to have uneven wear.
