Batwing fairings/windshields

Question if I may......... I've seen a few of you are running
the little batwing fairings/windshields.

Where are you guys finding them?

I've lowered my windshield to the lowest position and
then cut 3 more inches off it. I'm from the look over rather
than through the plexi club. The seat height is so low on
the Nomad It really puts you way under the windshield.
It's much better now that I've cut it, but I do like the look
of the bat wing and the way it covers the hands.

Are they a bolt on deal made specifically for the Nomad, or
are you making em fit?

Windshield after cutting it down 3" and lowering it 2". I'm only
5'10" and it's still a little high. Don't really want to cut it again
though. Picture in sig line is when I first got it. Raised to the
highest position and the original full height. There was literally
6" of plexi above my line of sight. I know some like looking
through the plexi, but I can't handle the distortion and glare
it puts off at times.

Do you mean the windshields? Most of the fairings take a stock three hole Harley fairing, some of the older fairings are a five hole mount. They are available at an HD dealer or from almost any parts supplier as well.
The smaller air deflectors that go on the bottom of the fairing are also held on with three allen bolts. The HD and Premeux fairings already have the inserts in the fairing for them. These deflectors are around $30.00 at the dealer.

Yeah I guess. The same or similar thing as yours and the picture of the black bike I put in the thread. Maybe my terminology is off. I'm talking about changing out my clear stock windshield for the fiberglass windshield combo deal.

So that's a stock Harley piece?

Found one on a search. About what I figured price-wise. Says it fits metric cruisers. Reckon that would work.

On most aftermarket fairings with a 3-hole windshield mount, a windshield from the Harley Ultra Glide, Electra Glide or Street Glide will fit.

I have a Reckless fairing on my bike and have 6", 8" and 10" windshields for it. The 6" looks cool, but it doesn't protect as well. The 8" and 10" offer the same wind protection for me, so I use the 8" most often.

With a batwing, the shape is much more aerodynamic than the big vertical slab of plexiglas that the Nomad windshield has, so the windshield doesn't have to come up near as high as the stock windshield, at least that's been my experience. I am ~6'1" and sit several inches above the top of the windshield.

So by the looks of your photos you're running the 8" or 10" I guess? I could probably get by with the 6" being as I'm quite
a bit shorter than you.

Steve, did you paint yours to match or have it professionally done? It looks great on there and really gives it a custom look.

If you just want to black out the windshield you can either paint it on the backside, or appy a very dark window tint.

Not so much a blacked out or tinted thing I'm trying to
accomplish here. Really going for a more aerodynamic
thing. Hands covered is nice as I alluded to earlier. Also
just gives it that together look IMO.

Yes. That's perfect. I thought the one on the right looked shorter.

I use a 10" window on mine, I like it for the wind and rain protection, When I sit up straight I can just see over the top of it.

I'm assuming that since Cactusjack has different sizes
of plexi that they're relatively easy to change out? I
like convertibles.

We don't really get much in the way of adverse weather
here in Arid-zona. Rain is a rarity. Although when it does
rain, it usually pours in which case you probably wouldn't
want to be riding at that moment anyway.

6" of annual rainfall and it all comes in 15 minutes.......

Right. I try to avoid riding in monsoon storms, however we did get caught in a steady rain last August on an overnight trip on the Coronado Trail. It rained on the way home from Nutrioso to nearly Kohl's Ranch. It was dry as a bone once we got down off the rim. The fairing does a great job of rain protection.

Aint that a trip. I work on the rim regularly. Amazing the change that takes place between Payson and Fountain hills. Like two completely different worlds and only an hour's drive between em.

The Black bike that you used in your thread is my 2003 1500.
The fairing is a Wide Open Custom fairing that is made for the 1600.
I have about $900.00 total in the fairing. Some spacers are required and the headlight needs to be moved forward about an inch. I designed all the parts necessary and can e-mail you drawings if you choose a Wide Open Custom fairing. The windshield that is on it in that photo is a 5" that is too short for me. I am about 6' tall and have since replaced it with an 8" shield. My fairing has a Jensen stereo with 4 Kenwood speakers. I also have Vance & Hines pipes and can hear the music even at 80-90 mph.

I have a Reckless fairing with the 5" wind screen and I like it just fine but I do have a shield for my helmet in case of rain because there is no way to get behind the 5" shield.

I have a Harley fairing with an 8" shield I got from Road6customs on Ebay. I look right over the shield but if I slouch I look through it.
