de baffle, who?

who here has pulled the rear baffles on their stock pipes on a voyager or vaquero? Are you happy with the sound or is it obnoxious and tinny? I'm looking for a bit more rumble but don't want to attract the attention of the police.

Thinking of doing mine, finding it a little too quiet when i roll onto the fuel.

A one plate debaffle will produce very little volume increase and NO heat reduction. Removing both baffle plates produces a nice mellow rumble that is in no way obnoxious. Try the one plate-nothing to loose.

Greetings,
I did the the whole enchilada. Drilled out all three plates using a 1 1/4" hole saw. Front and back. Required cutting the left pipe before the bend to get to the backside (3rd) plate. Then had the pipe welded back.
Sound is "ok", a little more volume, decent tone.
However, noticeably more decel pops. That got annoying quick. Tried to add an EJK to address the pops, that didn't help enough. Need more AIR in. Added more air in via Chuckster's BAK. Then, couldn't let enough air out. Even though the pipes are "open" the passage is narrow enough that exhaust still didn't flow well. Solved air out with V&H slash cuts.
The gutted Nomad pipes are listed in the parts for sale section. Free, you pay shipping... Then you would know...

And that's what I don't want to get into. It's like trying to even out a three legged chair, pretty soon there's no chair. I'm only interested in getting rid of the first plate and tube. Did you do it in stages and compare sound or did you just gut them in one shot?

I had Chucksters BAK and a Powrpro with the stock 2010 mufflers on my Voyager.
I never heard any decel pops and the bike ran way better than stock.

Otter, I just did the gutting all at once. You are right about the three legged chair... :)

Ride safe,

I did 1 on each pipe, started, then did the 2nd ones right away. Not a big increase in sound, but is improvement. Mine is a 12 Voyager. They did change muffler for I think the 11 model year, made them quieter. The older ones have a slash cut style end, the newer are tapered. I think they all have catalitic converters in them, so if you dont punch these out, the sound should never get really loud. I also did the front baffle on the right and at 70 mph, the wind noise is about as loud the pipes, just a mellow rumble.

Mine is a 15, same pipes as yours. Can you walk me through removing the plates and are there tubes to pull out as well?

Greetings Otter,
You will need a 1 1/4" bi-metal hole saw. A drill bit extender will be needed to get deeper than the first one (plate).
No tubes to pull out.
Shine a flashlight in the outlet of the exhaust, you will see the wall or first plate. Slide the hole-saw up the tube to the plate and proceed. Rinse and repeat on the other side (pipe).

These are from a '10 Nomad pipe, but the process is the same, just a larger hole-saw on the older pipes.

Ride safe,
Smokier

Not to hijack your thread, but a couple quick questions concerning a 2011 Nomad.

So, what could I expect out of a 2 plate removal and a Chucksters BAK? Improved performance or just decel popping?

Is there an air kit that would provide something between a K & N and Chucksters BAK? A middle ground. I don't want to get into custom tuning. Too much money and I don't have the patience for it.

I have the tapered pipes. What I would call "the first plate" is about 1/4" from the end of the pipe. Once I drill out the plate, what happens to the tube that the plate surrounds? I'm feeling pretty dumb right now, have never messed with an exhaust.

Pretty sure it is the baffle and will slide right out using pliers to tug on the edge of the tube.

Has anyone here done exactly this to this style of pipe?

I did on my 2012 Voyager and I'm pretty happy with the tone and volume.
