So here goes. I took delivery of my 03 Nomad last Wednesday. Thursday I went over the bike and took off the seat, bags, windshield, etc., so that I could clean it up and find out what need some TLC. I came up with a few things that I hope somone can help me with.
1. The pictured part was bolted to the left side case behind the rear cylinder. Looks like it might hold the idle adjustment but it is already mounted on the right side. Any idea what it is? 2. There is a choke knob below the ignition switch. It doesn't work. ??? Should it...on an FI? 3. What is the third position on th ignition? This just keeps my tail light lit. Aso the headlight doesan't come on until the engine is running. Is this normal? Sorry about all the dumb q's but any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Welcome from Louisiana.
I'm not sure what the clip is. My idle adjustment bracket was fastened behind the OEM right side intake plate. The choke knob is only a fast idle for cold starts. Idle should be faster with it pulled. The third position is only a park light. The headlight only comes on when the engine is cranked.

Welcome to KawaNOW! You've come to the right place for answers ;)
Regarding your questions: 1) I have an '05, but my idle adjustment is on the right-side. 2) Even the FI's have a "choke" knob. It seems to only hold the trottle a little higher for warming up (in my opinion). Does yours have any affect on a running engine? 3) That third position is "parking lights", that some engineer felt should only include the tail light . . . And the headlight does requre the engine to crank to start.

Could the "mystery part" be the ground connection for jumpstarting? I have a similar, but not identical part on my 2007. Here's the part # and description from cheapcycleparts.com:
13271 PLATE 13271-1448 1 $3.09 $4.63 The "choke" really isn't a choke, it's more of a fast idle. The third position of the ignition switch is a feature that turns on the taillights. Kind of a safety thing - if you're parked along the side of a road at night or something. I've never used it. Welcome to the forum.

That little part on your bike is just a little gizmo that serves no purpose. I have one on my bike as well. I don't know what it is for, perhaps something during manufacture.

If the "choke" is having no effect, then it may be that your intake has been modified and that some or many of the normal intake parts may be missing. Like the cold idle solynoids for example. You may have to pull the dog bowls and see where your filter is or take a look at your plumbing and see if some of it has been redirected or closed off. Enjoy, it's a great bike, and hey....some of the fun is in discovery.

1. I have that same little gizmo on mine and after checking (2000 FI 1500), there are 2 wires, I believe one goes to the harness (the big one) and not sure what the other goes to but mine holds the smaller wire so that there is no stress on it...Hope this helps and welcome to the best forum on the net...Jody

Thanks Dave...I kinda had a feeling that it ws something like that. Seriously, thanks to all who resonded and you can see that it has been removed already so I didn't think I would need it. As for the choke, carbed bikes had me spoiled and I guess I was looking for a little more but she starts and idles fine every time. I hope I don't stress everyone out with the questions.
Thanks again. |

Welcome to the Nomad forum. You are going to have fun finding little surprises and the folks here will put up with all kinds of "dumb" questions so don't be afraid to ask. Enjoy the bike.

Welcome. You'll get lots of answers here.
1) Always make sure to include the year of your bike. There are some interesting variations. 2) That BD fellow might be stopping around soon. Hopefully, it's not too late, but for any answers you already received, there is no need to send him cash. He IS convincing at times, but not really our group's PayPal service.
