License plate strobe

I was riding with a large group yesterday, and some of the riders had a little strobe light mounted on their license plate frame. It's a little cube, about 1" square. Has anybody seen one of these or know who sells them? I assume they are battery-powered. I didn't get a chance to ask the guys who actually had them.

I don't know if they're legal or not. They aren't really bright enough to distract anyone, but they do get your attention. The guys that have them on their bikes are the outriders or "cat herders" of the group, and use them so the riders in the pack can easily identify them.

License plate strobe

Sounds similar to something I had on my BMW. They were called Hyperlites. 2 sets of LEDs about 1 inch square. They were held on to any mounting spot with double sided tape or you could use their metal license plate mount. They would flash either as long as you held the brake on or flash for 5 seconds and then stay on solid for the rest of the brake cycle if you cut a jumper on the circuit board. Perfectly legal mod just like headlight modulators. I was considering getting them for the new Nomad actually.

I had something like that on my pedal bike. Had a button on the bottom to either glow steady or flash. Maybe check a bike shop unless it was something that was actually wired into the bike.

A guy from church has lights similar to that. He doesn't use them when he's riding since they are white and on the back. He has a separate switch for them and uses them as hazard lights. Not a bad idea. They are very bright and the strobe effect will let people know you are there.
