Oil Capacity?
I recently changed my oil in '03 Nomad and used a Supertech ST7317 filter, but I can't get as much oil back in as is listed. I used the side plug and cleaned the screen, removed the filter and let it drain for about a half hour. I can only get about 2 3/4 quarts in it and it shows about half way in the sight glass when the bike is level. (Same thing the last time i changed the oil with a k&n filter)
Am I doing something wrong???

Oil Capacity?
Have you started the bike and filled the oil filter ? You might get more in afterwards. I usually fill to near the top of the sightglass and it takes about 3 and 3/4 litres.

Oil Capacity?
USA bikes say they take about 3.3 qts. some maybe a little more depending on how well you drain it. yes start the bike let it run a little and then let it cool and drain back into the crankcase. then check your level again. the 1600 might take 3.3-3.5 qts.

Let it sit over night fireman. Level it in the morning and check your oil level. You'll probably need to add some.

Oil Capacity?
I posted this very question (in the wrong forum) yesterday. Welcome to the same club. I know all the responses mean well but it doesn't solve the issue. You can only squeeze so much oil in and it doesn't seem like enough. I hope an appropriate explanation can be found. ???

Oil Capacity?
When installing a new oil filter in conjunction with changing the oil you will have to start the engine after putting in at least 2 1/2 quarts of oil. This will fill up the oil filter and allow the necessary room to put in the final amount of oil. If you can't get a total of 3.3 quarts added after running the engine to fill the new filter then you must not have actually drained all the old oil out.

Oil Capacity?
I pour at least 8 ounces in the filter before putting it on. The oil will "wick" into the element and you wont have a "dry" start. I put in 3.5 quarts total and after circulating it for a few minutes I shut it down. Then I wait an hour or so to check it (you have to wait at least an hour or more until all the oil in the top end drains to the crankcase or it will always look low in the site glass) The oil then is near the very top of the site glass for me.
Trip had this issue a while back. He thought he was burning oil because he would shut his Nomad off and it would "look" low in the site glass. I told him to check it in the morning and quit adding additional oil. It worked...he's not burning oil!

Oil Capacity?
Be glad you do not have a V2K. I understand they have 3 drain plugs and the oil change procedure actually has a learning curve. On the other hand, they burn so much oil after awhile that you won't need to change it. :)

I put in 3 qts and the gauge is 1/2.. I ll check tomorrow.. GREAT info THANKS everyone......Rich

Oil Capacity?
I still don't get it. I understand the bike should hold 3.3 qts, but I warmed the motor up, drained it again until it wasn't even dripping, got a new filter and put about 4 oz in it before installing and then put the 3.3 qts (including the 4 oz in filter). I started it up and rode it around the block and then let it sit for 2 days. The oil completely fills the site glass when leveled now. So I guess my question now is, I'm guessing for what ever reason, I have too much oil so should i take some out? I'm assuming the level of oil in the site glass is more important than how much you actually put in. If I don't take some out, will it do some damage to any seals or anything?
I appreciate everone's help
