Air intake duct work
I want to have cam chain extenders put in my '01 carbed Nomad. Most all the post I have read mention the difficulty caused by the air intake on the front jug. Can any of the duct work be removed, and not reinstalled, and still retain the stock air cleaner? With my riding style, unless I am going to get a LOT better gas mileage, I don't see an advantage for me to go to after market air intake. And if the duct work is elliminated would I have to rejet the carb?
Thanks for your time

Tuff one ain't it.. That cross over tube makes like harder than it needs to be. Seems the choices are fight the thing, and get the chain tensioner out, or use a heat gun and bend the cross over tube out of the way in a very limited sence, and then do the same thing to form it back into shape with great care.
I am only familar with the injected bikes, so can't help on the carb bikes unless someone brings me one to work on first. I am guessing the cross over tube is similar. Since the stock filter is on the left side and there is no air filter on the right as seated, you must have that cross over tube. Getting the tube out the proper way is a royal pain, which is the only other choice, and still be able to use it. Well there is a last ditch choice too, cut the bloomin thing off, and then plastic weld it back. I did that to my 06, and if the day comes I must, I could plastic weld it back. I dioubt that day will ever come.

If you remove the crossover tube, then you lose the air filter on the left, and you will have a large opening on the right backing plate where the tube used to connect. You could fabricate a plate to block that hole, and use a 9" round air filter assembly instead of the dog dish on the right side. Or, you lose the stock backing plate altogether and go with a custom intake. Those are your options.

Im not sure what the RH backing plate looks like on a carbed bike, but on my 02 FI the oem backing plate will take a 7" round filter, I use a K&N, and it fits just fine with a chrome cover.

Air intake duct work
I ended up cutting my crossover tube out when I did my extenders, therefore having to relocate the air filtering system to the right side. By doing this, I opted to do the Coyote modification for carbed Nomads per Gadget's website as follows: http://www.gadgetjq.com/coyotekitmod...structions.htm
This made it run super lean and yes, you will have to rejet the carb in order to richen up the fuel/air mixture so it will run great again.
