Dirt Roads

I grew up on a dirt road in Ohio. Sadly it has now been paved. A lot of what Paul Harvey says about them is true. You only tailgated if you were totaly nuts. We walked a lot. We knew all of our neighbors. Riding a mc or a bicycle was a challenge.

Dirt Roads

Idaho, I grew up on a dirt road also. Had one bike through all the years from the time I was six or seven until I was 15. The rear axle finally just broke. I bet I had 10,000 miles on it. I remember putting burned motor oil on the road to keep the dust down.

Dirt Roads

That was good.

When I was growing up in southern Michigan we lived on a road we called a "tarvy." The road crew would spray hot tar on the road and then cover it with gravel. When it was newly "repaved" you had to slow way down when meeting oncoming traffic or your windshield would get busted from all the flying gravel. After a few weeks the gravel would get packed down pretty good into the tar and then it would be ok until they paved it again. Had lots of dirt roads. We could pick asparagus, wild raspberries and sometimes even find mushrooms alongside the dirt roads.

The best part of the dirt roads, when I was in school, was during the Spring Thaw. The dirt roads would turn into mud about a foot deep. The school buses were always getting stuck. It was great if you were on your way to school, not so much when coming home though!

Man, those days are long gone! :(
