Clutch slipping!

I was riding home and in 5th gear. I wanted to pass a vehicle and when I opened the throttle and started to pass, not at first but the engine started to rev but the bike was not going faster. It was like the clutch was slipping. Any thoughts?

It likely was slipping.

Get a Meanie or Barnett Spring and a pair of Judges washers.

It is an easy fix. After doing a few I have it down to under an hour.

I have a Barnett MT-25 spring on hand for when mine starts to slip. I'm at 29,000 miles and expect it to start slipping before 40,000. When it does, all I'll need is the right side engine cover gasket.

Your clutch was slipping, but like already said, its a real easy, cheap fix, just follow Gadgets instructions and youll have no problems. A good impact gun is a lot better than a Johnson bar for getting the large nut off.

OFF here is the KEY WORD! Taking things OFF with air is fine, just not the other way around.

This is typical of these springs.

You sure are getting lucky with this bike.

So, which spring would I use for a 1500? (2003 FI) I don't necessarily want a heavier one, just to put it back to stock.

I used a Mean Streak spring and it's holding up very well.

So far as I know the meanie spring is the only stock spring you can by anymore, which fits 15's and 16's. Then there is a real spring made custom by people who depend on coming to work because they need jobs and so Barnett has the best springs made.

They been around a good long time too, long before i put their clutch in my 67 Pontiac Firebird

However if you put a barnett spring in a Nomad you had better know how to clutch. It will defeat thye slipper clutch system, and if you goof up you will find out what it means to mess up.

Get the heavier spring, it will last longer, and the clutch will grab better.

Meanie spring last year. I had the same scenario as blueraven. Replaced the U-joint this year. If you get that bike fixed right it will go you a long time. Sounds like someone before you didn't maintain it correctly. Hang in there...

What Mac is talking about is the "slipper" function of the clutch on these bikes. The clutch is built so that if you don't shift as cleanly as you ought, it has some built in "slip", and you won't lock up your rear wheel. The Barnett spring is (apparently) a lot stiffer than the stock spring, and defeats that "slipper" function. So, if you don't shift quite right, you may lock up the rear wheel and have a not so good day.
