The trial (shocking update)

Some of you may recall the horrific accident that occurred in Phoenix in late March of 2010. A group of riders were stopped at a traffic light and were plowed into from behind by a dump truck. The dump truck driver was found to have meth in his system. 4 riders were killed and 5 more were severely injured.

The trial is underway for this piece of human excrement. He took the stand yesterday and said that if there was anything in his system, it was "diet pills", and he claims his brakes failed. Witnesses said he never hit his brakes, he wasn't even looking up when he hit them.

I would think if I tried to hit my brakes and they failed, I'd be leaning on the air horn to warn the people stopped in front of me.

This clown is going to go down hard.

Thanks for the update. Local news around here never seems to follow up.
You hear of the wrecks, but rarely the trial.

The trial (shocking update)

As a truck driver for 32 years, I constantly search the road ahead for issues and run various "what if" scenarios thru my head in case the worst happens. First off I always test my brakes well in advance of a stop, and begin the braking process early with the thought that anything can happen be prepared. My choices in that case if my brakes had failed would have been to swerve and side swipe cars or a building in order to stop the truck, minimizing the chance for a fatality, or into an inanimate object taking my self out potentially, but never into a stopped group or head on with anyone. I hope justice prevails and this guy gets what he deserves. Keep us posted.

Seeing the pictures from the link above reminds me that there isn't a hole deep enough the throw this a-hole in.

I certainly hope he gets a lot of years. Probably won't but we can always hope. Thanks for the link Scott.

Turns my stomach, too. The live pictures from the helicopter above the scene right after it happened were very unsettling. Hopefully this driver will get sent to prison and the bikers in there will save the taxpayers some money.

The trial (shocking update)

Jesus, that's horrible. Whenever I'm at a stop light, I always keep my eye on my rear view mirrors watching cars behind me, making sure they are slowing down and stopping. I also usually keep flicking my front brake on and off, repeatedly, so that people coming up behind me see the brake light going on and off. If it doesn't look like they are slowing done, I'll take off.

As for the newspaper article, it say's they did a blood test, which I would think would show the level of drugs in his system. Also, because of the fatalities, I would think the truck would be impounded and gone over, especially when he said the brakes were pulling. And, the cops would have a accident investigator there mapping the whole thing out, which would also show by marks on the road if he's brakes were pulling, what speed he was going, etc.

Whether the guy gets a long sentence or not, it's such a travesty what happened to those cyclist, and then to burn up, too. Just horrible.

Sure there is. You have the grand canyon to the north of you. We could do it all at once or a piece at a time. ;)

Even if they could execute this guy, it is a shame he can only die once.
