Cam chain tensioner extenders

Good day all- just finished installing extenders on my bike - 42500miles- and the results are unbelievable. wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. Took about 2hrs by myself! Chuckster makes a good product and his turn around time on orders is unheard of. Thanks to all on this forum for posting info on things.

My bike has about 24K miles on it and I have been thinking about going ahead and doing the extenders. I have the hanging in my garage.

Was the noices from the loose chains obvious? You have 40k+ miles on your bike makes me think I ought to wait a bit longer.

24k is a little premature for cam chain extenders. I wouldn't worry about them for at least another 10k, unless you have noise or check them and you are out of travel.

:) Yes there was a distinctive metal click (some describe as a bike chain type noise). IT is gone. 24k is probably a little soon but it also depends on your driving style I am told.

Jared I would definitely wait until you are around the 35,000 mile range. Wait until the last possible moment and that way the chain may have stretched as much as it is going to. Then you won't have to worry about doing it again. Just my thought.

I had 3 teeth of travel left on one and 4 on the other at 25,000 miles. If it's noisy Jared, I would take a look. If not, wait a few more thousand miles. It doesn't get noisy all at once. It's progressive making it less noticeable.

I wouldn't do it until it was neccessary, wait until your extenders are at, or almost totally out of travel. Just check them once or twice a season until its time.

Is checking them as simple as unbolting them and taking a look?

Also, the left side would be easier to look at. You'd assume they wear about the same speed on each cylinder, right?

Both tensioners wear approx the same, you can unscrew the cap and check the depth without having to reset the tensioner. Take a look at Gadgets site, he has an excellent how to on checking and replacing tensioners.

Be careful not to break the big spring when screwing the cap back on. The best method is to pull the cap, check the travel, and then remove the entire assembly and reset it according to the shop manual instructions. A few have heard the spring snap after it binding inside of the cap as it is screwed back on.
