Batwing Fairing
Hi Guys!
As I am getting further into my project to bring a long neglected 2002 nomad back from the dead, I have decided that I want a Streetglide type batwing fairing. I have seen several pictures with them and that's definitely the look I want to go with. The only problem is there seems to be many to choose from and a VERY wide price range. So here is the question, is there one that has proven to be better then the others and also, is there one that fits onto the factory windshield bracket/mounting points? Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.

Most of them will have brackets for the OEM windshield mounts. Most people seem to go with Reckless but there are cheaper ones on eBay that are made of fiberglass that need finishing. You can usually pick one up for around 229.00 from eBay. The ABS plastic ones will break easier than the fiberglass ones.
If you're going to go with the OEM Street Glide fairing you can pick them up on eBay also.

I have the Reckless fairing and love it. There are several companies out there, just depends on how much you want to spend. There are some cheap ones on e-bay and there are some expensive ones like DragonFly, Premeaux, Hoppe Quadzilla. Most fairings come with the hardware specific for the bike in question. Good luck with your search.

Reckless was giving VBA members with a 'member number' a discount, you should look into that.

For ease of installation and very good quality, you can't beat the Premeux fairings. I personally like the HD fairings if your handy to make up the brackets.

Avoid the $229 model unless you are prepared to close many gaps with bondo and bodywork. The one that arrived at my house had a gap above the headlight that ran 1/8"-1/4" in width. BaggerBags.com is associated. I sent it back.

I have the 229.00 fairing and it was fine other than needing paint.

I had a genuine Harley batwing fairing on my '07. It took a bit of work but there are a ton of accessories available for it and there's room for a stereo AND a bunch of gauges. I had a full compliment of gauges except I couldn't get the HD speedo to work. (FWIW, the HD tach is a 3 wire hook up.) If I had to do it again, I'd go with the HD fairing.

If it's not the one offered by BaggerBags.com or bodypartsusa.com you may be ok. I will say that the customer service on the return was great, they even refunded my shipping both ways.
Actually, plans to add a batwing to my VTX1800 are what ended up causing me to sell it and get my 2011 Voyager. Once I noticed that a batwing only adds $25-30 to book value, I decided not to waste the money adding anything else. |
